562137 2007-06-24 01:00:00 Hi,

I decided to go 64-bit, and proceeded to set up a dual boot between XP Pro 32bit which i currently have, and the 64 bit version.

My original set up is on a Asus Core 2 Duo Striker Extreme which has the nForce 680i chipset. I had 2x Seagate 320GB's in RAID 0 connected to SATA ports 1 and 2, which was my C:\ and had the original Windows XP 32-bit installation on it. I had a 300GB and a 320GB on SATA 3 and 4 by themselves with other stuff on them. I had a spare 320GB, but couldn't install it as my 8800GTX is in the way (they are HUGE!). So i backed up all the data on the 300 and 320 onto the RAID disk, and my external 250GB USB, took the old 300GB out, and put in the new 320GB. So i now have 2x 320GB in RAID 0 in SATA ports 1 and 2, a 320 in SATA port 3 and another 320 in SATA port 4.

I then installed XP 32-bit onto the 1st of the 320GB's which came up as C: in the installation (i loaded the RAID drivers etc by pushing F6 during the installation). that was sweet, loaded up ok, saw all the drives in My Computer.

Then I went ahead and installed the 64-bit version onto D:\ or the second of the 320GB's (loaded the 64-bit version of the RAID drivers during installation by pushing F6). See where i'm going? I will use the RAID drive as my documents folder (risky, i know). Anyway, Windows copies the files across to the hard drive, then restarts to load into the GUI part of the setup... except it load my ORIGINAL windows installation from the RAID array when i choose the x64 option in the boot loader!!! the only way that it loads the x64 version is if i choose to boot from the CD, but push nothing when it says 'press any key to boot from CD...' and then proceeds to the boot loader. When i choose x64 from there, it loads sweet as. the installation finished, and it could see all the hard drives in My Computer.

But if i dont do the option from booting from the CD, it loads my ORIGINAL XP installaton from the RAID array. Here is a copy of my boot.ini file:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

I checked, and I am using the 64-bit version of ntldr and ntdetect.com

Any ideas anyone?

562138 2007-06-25 05:12:00 never mind, i fixed it. had to re-build the file using the bootcfg tool in the recovery console, then edit one of the entries to point it to the right disk. works a treat now :D stephen (9719)
