561913 2007-06-23 04:43:00 I'm not sure what's going on, but my computer randomly stops responding. I can still move the mouse around, but when I mouse-over things, they do not highlight like normal, and I can't click them. If I have music playing at the time, it will continue playing regardless. If I press CTL+ALT+DEL, the screen comes up, but again, I can't press any buttons. One thing that happens that is weird though, if I leave my mouse over a button, or press the button and push CTL+ALT+DEL, the button will highlight, or press, but after the task manager box pops up, the problem persists.
Also, at the same time this started happening, my registry (I'm assuming it is a registry problem) got messed up. The Add/Remove programs thing stopped working because almost all of the change/remove buttons disappeared. Also, my photoshop activation went missing and I had to reinstall that because it would not work without the activation. Ram should be no problem, I have a gig. Hard drive space should be fine, I've got like 20 free gigs.

I would appreciate any suggestions, because this is really annoying me and I'd love to get to the bottom of it. Again, this is really random and happens regardless of what I'm doing or what programs/apps are open.

Edit: Also, one thing to add. I am able to press the sleep button on my keyboard and put the computer to sleep. then I can turn it on and go to the log in screen (where it displays all the profiles) and everything works fine on all the profiles, but when I log into mine the problem is still there.

561915 2007-06-23 08:04:00 I had a computer doing weird stuff a while back. I ended up making a backup and reinstalling the operating system. Then this was on a windows 98 machine.

You on the other hand may be more fortunate. Have you tried restoring your system (via System Restore) back to before you had these issues?
Also, create a new account (as a test). Does it do the same things? have the same issues?
Myth (110)
561916 2007-06-24 00:16:00 I tried restoring my system when I noticed this, but every time, no matter which restore point I chose, it came back saying that it was unable to complete the system restore.
As for other accounts, the add/remove programs don't work on the other accounts either, but I'm not sure if they are having the same problem with the locking up.
It isn't really locking up though, because sometimes it does it right when windows is in the process of loading all the programs and stuff when I start up, but it completes everything... I just can't click or select anything.
Thanks for the replies, any more ideas?
Edit: I just remembered doing something a while ago. I'm not sure if it was before of after this problem started occuring, or if it would even cause such a problem. Maybe someone here would know...
I had needed to do a FireFox update, and it wouldn't work because FF always turned itself on in the task manager (even though I didn't have anything open in FF) so there was always 2 different things that said FireFox under the runnying processes if I had FF open. I changed the name of the FireFox exe in the program files, and it seemed to stop it from opening itself so the update could install. (because it kept telling me to close FF, but it just kept opening that process back up the second I told it to stop running). Would this affect anything, and does anyone know why FireFox was doing this?

And I did the log file thing. Not sure if I did it right, but here:

Get Rogueremover in my sig update it then click on scan. It should HOPEFULLY remove WinAntivirus Pro 2007. I would say this is whats causing the not responding prob. Then reboot.

561920 2007-06-25 02:10:00 Sounds like a corrupted profile to me. You said the other profiles are fine!......

You will need to delete the profile and let it recreate when you log in again!

You might want to backup your docs and e-mail 1st though

561921 2007-06-26 05:07:00 Well I did all that.
Thank you so much, you don't know how much I appreciate the help. I really do hope this solves the problem. I'll try to stay active here, maybe check out the general chat forum if you got one. I'll tell you if it happens any more, but hopefully this worked :)

Oh yeah, another thing that I should add if this doesn't work, it isn't uncommon for the problem to occur when I push the volume buttons on my keyboard. I have no idea why that triggered it sometimes but it did. That wasn't the only time it froze though.

Oh well, thanks again for the help, I hope it stops acting badly, or I'll have to put my laptop through the window xD
