561662 2007-06-22 10:21:00 Hi all,
I am currently in Thailand and using an ADSL modem to connect to the internet but have problems getting Thunderbird - (or Outlook Express) working properly. I can receive mails fine, but cant send using either program.
The error message I get is this:

Unknown error has occured. Account 'mail.orcon.net.nz'. Server. 'mail.orcon.net.nz' Protocol: SMTP, server responce. '550 Invalid HELO/EHLO must contain a FQDN or IPv6 literal in []'. Port 25. Secure(SSL); No, Server Error. 550, error number: 0x800CCC69

Thats what it says in Outlook Express anyway, Thunderbird gives a less detailed description.

Can anyone confirm if this tutorial on the Orcon website is the right way to go about fixing this problem without making things worse please:

www.orcon.net.nz ins_email/

In case it is relevant, I had been using dialup in NZ for my Orcon account.

Thanks for any help!

561663 2007-06-22 10:26:00 You may have to check it thru their webmail option (www.orcon.net.nz) on their site.

It maybe coz youre overseas why its bringing up errors.

You can't send through Orcon SMTP outgoing mail server unless you are connected to them.

You need to change the Outgoing mail server in your mail program to that of the ISP you are connected with.

That’s incorrect Safari (That only applies to Xtra's smtp server) (if I want I can send mail via Orcon smtp ( & I am with Xtra))

All Johnnz has to do is in OE under "server" for his mail account settings (where it has the POP & SMTP info) is tick the box called “My server requires Authentication" > Settings > “Outgoing Mail server” Make sure the check box is on “use same settings as my incoming mail server”

Hope this helps Johnnz :)

If you set up secure SSL you can as you say but I was not sure if Orcon supported that. Not all ISPs do.
By the way you only tick Outgoing server requires authentication not the incoming.
You also have to do the following
Go to the Advanced tab and tick "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) section, and change the port number to 465 if it does not change automatically.

561667 2007-06-22 10:54:00 Thanks for the quick replys guys, but unfortunatly I still have no luck in getting it working. I read somewhere else that suggested adding in "dsl" to the Server information tab in the outgoing mail section - to make it read mail.dsl.orcon.net.nz, but that didnt work either. Johnnz (7246)

You don’t need to use secure SSL, as my way will work with out it

No you don’t need to do that.
