561591 2007-06-22 03:20:00  Hi
I was wondering if you could help me.
I have just got BB today and I have signed up to a 256k plan but when I went to test it out at Consumer I got this:
Download- 2085kbps
Upload - 127kbps

It seems very fast.
Is it just that I have been so used to slow dial up or have I got a problem?
Thank you
Hunter

The problem is your getting confused with bits and bytes.

There are 8 bits in a byte, your plan is 256 kilo-byte per second. If you divide 2085 (kilobits) by 8, you will see it's around 256 (kilo bytes).

EDIT: No wait, i'm confused too.... 256 is supposed to be 256 kilobits per second, so you should download at around 32kbps....something is wrong, but i wouldnt complain!!!!

561593 2007-06-22 03:32:00 OK
so if my plan reads 256kbps download and 128kbps upload and the meter reads:
Download- 2085kbps
Upload - 127kbps

The "kbps" units are different?
I double checked and both of the "kb" parts on the meter and the test are lower case....?

561594 2007-06-22 03:33:00 Sorry i must have been smoking something:waughh: !!!

It sounds like you've been given either a 2mbit or as fast as your line allows connection!

561597 2007-06-22 03:37:00 ok. so I need to tell my isp then.

Cant they tell that it is wrong?
Hunter (12445)
561598 2007-06-22 03:42:00 It would depend on how they look at your usage...if you didn't tell them you might get the faster speed for a while until they notice... unless your really honest and wanna tell them :D wratterus (105)
561599 2007-06-22 03:46:00 oh no a moral dilema.

To tell or not to tell, that is the question.........

Is there a chance they are playing me?
Have they made this "mistake" so that when I get pushed back to 256kbps I will find it so slow I change my plan to the fast one?

Has anyone else had this happen?
