561563 2007-06-22 01:44:00 Over the past week I have had 3 similar PC's Lockup within minutes of entering windows. This is a total lockup, power off switch is only answer. PC's start in safe mode and run ok. Have restored to earlier time which temporary fixes problem. Have removed any recent updates. Have turned off everything in msconfig but still locks up. No mention of anything in event manager. Have researched Internet:dogeye: Any thoughts would be appreciated. Running AMD 64 3000+, 1GB DDR400, WD 80GB SATA HDD, Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 Motherboard, XP Pro SP2,

561564 2007-06-22 02:37:00 I would start by removing graphics card drivers and using the default Windows drivers, if any, and see what happens.
Do the same with the audio drivers if that doesn't fix it.
Failing that try running memtest for a while to make sure RAM is OK.

561565 2007-06-22 11:15:00 Hi there. I have this same issue and have posted in this thread:

forums.pcworld.co.nz

Basically I've narrowed it down to one of the latest windows updates - the one that updates the windows updater engine - but can't resolve it - had to reinstall everything and turn off automatic updates. Unless someone has a solution I'll keep updates off till there's enough written about it online then see what the real solution is.

I thought it was a harddrive issue but since everything worked in safe mode (and chkdsk said everything was healthy).

Can you get it to boot into Safe Mode and run OK there? Do you have Automatic Updates on (I usually advise against this - subscribe to a newsletter like WindowsSecrets and download specific patches on their advice instead)? There is an outstanding issue with svchost.exe that causes an affected PC to run at 100% CPU. Go to the M$ site and do a search if you think it could be related.
