561401 2007-06-21 16:52:00 Ok here is what is going on.

A few nights ago some of my friends came over to watch a fight on some channel that someone told us about. Well afterwords everybody had their laptops so we got ont hem and fooled around. Well the next day after i started mine up, it ran super slow, getting hung up at the xp boot screen.

Well my father said to reinstall windows so thats what i did and it still runs real slow. He is just now trying to reinstall it with a boot cd he had for the laptop.

I run a HP Pavillion ze4600 with AMD

any help please, the boot cd offers a repair on it as well as a fresh install of windows!

561402 2007-06-21 21:56:00 Your father a PC tech is he? No? Then he should have kept his bad advice to himself.

Reinstalling Windows is not fixing the problem.
And you can't just reinstall Windows, theres all the drivers it needs too.
If it did need such a drastic step, then using the Recovery CD or Partition would have been more sensible.

As for the slow problem, what exactly were you all doing with your laptops?
Shared any files?

Is it slow in Safe Mode or just normal mode?

I'd suspect malware first.

ANd as Pctek points out, if you ever reinstall a laptop you should use the recovery disks it came with as it has all the drivers for the laptop, getting drivers afterwards if you have just reinstalled using a standard windows disk is a nightmare

561404 2007-06-21 22:34:00 NO i did a reinstall witht he recovery disk, that is what i ment, it installed a fresh copy of windows xp home.

I usually just run the internet and 2 games on the laptop and that is it.

I have never tried it in safe mode cause it hangs

I tried to format the hard drive liek this tech guy told me on another forum, but it ended up saying that it couldn't do it, but when i went to the quick format, it worked.......

561407 2007-06-21 23:20:00 What did you use for the self dianostic? just the onboard diag? wratterus (105)
561408 2007-06-21 23:23:00 pressed F2, wet to Status, cloicked on Hard Disk self check Redmanx456 (12396)
561409 2007-06-21 23:25:00 OK, theres a whole bunch of reasons why the biult-in 'tests' sometimes don't work:badpc: even if they do it's safer to do a proper one. either look in the bios or pop out the HDD, check the brand and go to the manufactures website, they will have an option to download a diagnostic. burn it to a cd or floppy and boot off it. wratterus (105)
