563503 2007-06-27 11:32:00 If a Telecom report says:
<<
ADSL capability point: MSY/CZ Attenuation 47dB
>>

What does that imply as far as reliability/likely speed etc is concerned? A friend received this emailed response to a question about availability, and hasn't a clue what it means - and I don't either :)

563504 2007-06-27 19:57:00 I don't know what the MSY/CZ means but don't expect high speeds, the Attenuation limit is around 55dB. PaulD (232)
563505 2007-06-27 20:58:00 I don't know what the MSY/CZ means but don't expect high speeds, the Attenuation limit is around 55dB.I suspect MSY means "Massey" which is an adjoining suburb. That would also explain the high attenuation, as it would be several kilometres away. That was what I really didn't know - how serious 47dB was. Speed is still going to be considerably higher than dial-up though, isn't it? Does the attenuation imply any other issues, such as reliability? Tony (4941)
563506 2007-06-27 21:18:00 Most of Massey can get broadband. There is a dip along Triangle Rd where apparently they can't, but its not because of the attenuation.

Further up, bordering Whenuapai they can also but the exchange is like the one I have here - no caller ID etc.
So speeds aren't that great.

563507 2007-06-27 21:32:00 Exchange issues like caller ID have no bearing on the supply of ADSL, it's completely separate equipment. PaulD (232)
563508 2007-06-27 21:45:00 Most of Massey can get broadband. The house I'm talking about is actually not in Massey, but along the Scenic Drive near Pukematekeo, so it is quite a way from the exchange - hence the attenuation. As I wrote in the earlier post, speed is still going to be significantly better than dial-up though, isn't it? Tony (4941)
563509 2007-06-27 21:55:00 Yes, so long as you get a reliable connection the speed will be better. I was a slow convert from dialup but even capped to "dialup" speeds 7.5kB/s is better than 5kB/s. PaulD (232)
563510 2007-06-27 22:16:00 Yes, so long as you get a reliable connection the speed will be better. I was a slow convert from dialup but even capped to "dialup" speeds 7.5kB/s is better than 5kB/s.I guess it is the reliability thing I'm most worried about. This enquiry is for a computer-literacy challenged friend, and I don't want to end up with frequent help calls if I recommend she "upgrades". Tony (4941)
563511 2007-06-27 23:57:00 At 47dB you are looking at a "possible" attainable speed of around 5564kb/s on ADSL 1, and 6406 kb/s on ADSL2; the exchange is approximately 3403m from your home.

Cheers

563512 2007-06-28 05:38:00 At 47dB you are looking at a "possible" attainable speed of around 5564kb/s on ADSL 1, and 6406 kb/s on ADSL2; the exchange is approximately 3403m from your home. Thanks - that's really useful - how do you arrive at those numbers? And does the distance have any effect on reliability - or just speed? And how is that theoretical maximum likely to translate into real-world numbers? (I realize the huge number of variables involved, but roughly?) Tony (4941)
