What I want to know is what do you need to make apps like Flash and Photoshop and maybe 3D apps like Blender fly on Vista? Then I can work out how cost effective it would be compared to considering staying with Apple and the requirements for running the same apps. I think you might have to wait a few more months for the uptake of Vista to spread around a bit more in order to give you some more informed results to base your findings on. |

| 563146 | 2007-06-29 06:54:00 | ok, i gave up reading all the mac fanatic's posts, but can answer a few questions: 2GB of ram will be fine, but get atleast an nvidia 7300 or 6600gt preferably with 256MB video ram on them i hold acer is high esteem, but Asus is imho the best brand out there. don't go dell and i personally say to avoid hp, but i do see most places buy those brands for cost reasons, and i have seen some well spec'd dells in the engineering school at auckland uni good luck networking it all lol |

| 563147 | 2007-06-29 06:57:00 | as soon as i saw this thread i new macfan would be the first poster here. personally i'd largely ignore him, not because of his stuff up above, but the fact all he ever posts about is why the world should turn apple. not the unbiased voice i'm sure you're looking for sorry macguy, the fact is it is cheaper to maintain a fleet of pcs than apples, and for a school thats were is counts seeing as both systems are just as capable for the tasks required |

Then see if you can help him with any knowledge that you might have regarding running multimedia apps on Vista since that is what he is actually wanting to know. The school already runs Macs with XP in admin. Cheers. |

| 563149 | 2007-06-29 07:19:00 | actually i read all his posts and about 5 of yours. i know the school largely runs macs, but he is asking for advice on moving to vista as they are seriously considering it. seeing as most the software they use now has both mac and windows versions. i actually answered his questions about brands and specs, rather than arguing that mac is better than windows |

With regards to the later part of your comment, I would say horses for courses. |

| 563152 | 2007-06-29 10:09:00 | i gave my suggestions, did't you read my posts? Being that we are talking about 12 year olds what about 1 GB of RAM which is what I use on my iMac. Which version of Vista would you use and what is that like with Photoshop, movie editing and Bryce 3D as well as connecting to Macs and printing on a Server? I almost forgot, Total edu cost and servicing support? |

| 563153 | 2007-06-29 15:27:00 | considering vista eats 512MB of ram i thought 2GB would be a safe bet considering he said he'd disable all eye candy, i'd go with the home premium unless there is a special edu offer. as for photoshop i havn't tried myself, but think it safe to assume it would be identical to mac and xp. he's already looked at it, as he said, why can't you accept |

I gather that he is able to get the home premium in edu version. Most school systems that I have seen come with the base config of RAM since your only teaching the kids how to do stuff, your not running a production studio. Tiger runs fine on 1GB of RAM with Photoshop and the rest. (on my machine anyhow), the school machines are G4 eMacs which have an older Motorola chip. |
