563513 2007-06-28 06:18:00 Thanks - that's really useful - how do you arrive at those numbers? And does the distance have any effect on reliability - or just speed? And how is that theoretical maximum likely to translate into real-world numbers? (I realize the huge number of variables involved, but roughly?)

Yes distance does have an effect (in my opinion) on reliability . I say this because I'm about 4+ km's away from the exchange and I experience regular disconnects on a daily basis . However, generally your connection shouldn't be affected too much .

The possibility of you achieving the calculated maximum goes up the closer you are to the exchange . Again, this is my experience, I'm supposed to get a maximum of about 3000kb/s but in reality I get about 2000kb/s on a good day but mostly I'm at about 1500 - 1700kb/s . . . so basically at 4+ km's I'm only getting 50% of my supposed speed at that distance, which is really shocking when Telecom propose that I should be able to get at least 5000 to 6000kb/s .

How did I get those numbers . . . well I slipped into Theresa's office before she departed and stole her crystal ball . It was dirty as hell . . . which may be some indication as to why they never really saw the whole picture in Technicolour rainbow so to speak . :waughh: :waughh: :waughh:

No . . . really I have an Excel spreadsheet with formulae used to calculate all that stuff . . . All I need to do is enter the downstream attenuation and it tells me maximum theoretical speed for ADSL1 and ADSL2 as well as a rough estimate of distance from the exchange .

Cheers

Yep it's a straight line alright... straight down!!! :D :D

No it's not a straight line but I would think that it's a pretty steep decline the further away from the exchange you are. There are also other factors such as contention ratios etc.

Here is what the graph looks like ADSL Speed Vs Distance (www.imagef1.net.nz)

Hope that helps a bit.

CheersThis has been really interesting and helpful - thanks a lot. My friend says she has since heard from someone at Telecom that she is 2500m from the exchange, which if true shouldn't cause too much degradation at all, but even at 3403m she will still be much better off than at dial-up speed. :)

Yes you could assume that there won't be any problems at that distance . However as I pointed out earlier; you may have to deal with other factors such as contention ratios and maybe even the age of the equipment in the DSLAM closest to you .

I would have to say you're probably going to get decent speed at that distance from the exchange .

Thanks for all the info.

Where'd you get that graph from Chief? Because as far as I know, as close as 100m from exchange can actually degrade the speed of an adsl connection.

563520 2007-06-29 20:29:00 I have an Excel spreadsheet which I downloaded off an Aussie forum. There are 2 sheets with all the information on it. The spreadsheet was designed based on Telstra info in Aussie. I tried to get to the original websites by Internode and Whirlpool but the pages don't seem to exist.

cheers

563521 2007-07-01 12:13:00 the Masset CZ cabinet(thats what it's called) is about 200 metres back from the resturant on the Scenic Dr,down the bottom of the hill from your friend, and because of the cable involved from there up to your friends place, they should get good speeds and should have few problems Peter Coleman (597)

If by "back"from the latter - do you mean towards Titirangi? In that case AFAIK that is the Waiatarua exchange. It would seem strange to me that any exchange in that vicinity would be called "Massey". Tony (4941)
