| 563357 | 2007-06-27 07:11:00 | Hi NZHawk . I have the same issue too . I've searched through the net and only really get pointed to this article: . microsoft . com/technet/security/advisory/927891 . mspx" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com However I wasn't able to install the hotfix since after reinstalling XP SP2, I need to install other updates first before the fix can be installed . Which isn't possible since I'd need to install the update to windows updater (like you have done) . It is the update to windows updater that creates the lockup . I don't know why or how but I'd reinstalled Windows XP SP2 8 times to determine exactly what triggers off the lockup and by process of elimination, it is the update on the windows update site . So my advice would be to do a fresh install, and do not use automatic updates and do not go to the windows update site . This means I'm probably not protected against a plethora of attacks etc but my internet security system can update without problems so I'm relying on that . Other people have posted questions on this forum: . pcworld . co . nz/showthread . php?t=80413" target="_blank">forums . pcworld . co . nz I'm waiting for more news on this to show up before going back on windows update . A lot has been written about the svhost problem being the culprit but since it's not showing as active, I think it's just the windows update update . Silly huh? Hope this sheds some light . |

| 563360 | 2007-06-29 05:23:00 | Thank you for asking. So far the re-install is going smoothly, no problems yet. Will wrap it up tomorrow. Am staying clear of Windows Updates for the time being. |

| 563363 | 2007-06-29 05:33:00 | Yes siree! I am installing ZoneAlarm Free firewall . Should be ok - yes? Yup, shouldnt be a prob . Or just change auto updates to notify me but dont download . Select whatever from the taskbar, it'll save u going to the site . If going to the site itself was the prob before . |

| 563365 | 2007-06-29 22:27:00 | Have completed the set up & restore of the computer without Microsoft Updates and it works well. Rechecked the Internet Security is up-to-date, so all seems to be good until Microsoft sorts this problem out. Thanks to everyone for the input. |
