564679 2007-06-30 21:04:00 Hi all

my laptop (specs below) will not power up when NOT connected to mains. Will run fine on battery power, and continue to start up, on battery power as soon as start process has been started.

ASUS Z8100
AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 512MB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
MS Windows XP Pro SP2
LiOn battery

I have had a search of this forum and googled the problem and most mention to clean battery leads. This has not helped.

To further make matters strange, USB mouse has to be unplugged and plugged in again to work if mains power has been disconnected. Works fine if mains power is not turned off.

Any ideas out there on these issues?

Thanks
Frank

564680 2007-06-30 21:48:00 This sounds quite weird, and may have something to do with the circuitry switching between mains and battery. Is it still under warranty? If so, you should get it fixed ASAP. somebody (208)

564682 2007-06-30 23:02:00 The start-up current required is probably the peak current drawn from the battery, it may simply suggest that the battery is developing or has developed a higher internal resistance and can only now cope with the running current after start-up.

Is this the original battery?

564683 2007-06-30 23:26:00 Yes it is the original battery. Is this (nearly 2 years) pretty much the expected life of a battery?

Very different from other laptops in that the whole back cover has to be removed to remove the battery.

ASUS carries a 2 years International Warranty. Bring it back to them.

I did not know that. Will get on to them.

564686 2007-07-01 06:28:00 In the mean time, might I suggest trying hibernation mode to see if that helps? Faded_Mantis (79)

Perhaps you don't understand Hibernation.
All the RAM data is written to the HDD, then the laptop powers down.
When rebooted it boots from the Hiberfile to regain the previous state, but it's still a cold boot in reality from a hardware persepective.

564688 2007-07-01 06:59:00 Hi all

thanks for all the hints...

Managed t find a manual online - I know I should have read that first  - and this laptop has an "on - off" button to use before removing the battery. I did not even know I had this, but switching this to "off" works. Laptop can be turned on without connecting to mains.

Does not seem to make a lot of sense though.

Mouse is also working after re-enabling a previously disabled item in startup.
