564596 2007-06-30 08:24:00 Hi all

I have recently acquired a teenager who of course thinks the 5GB per month broadband is for him. I would like to limit this.

Using XP home I've set him up a profile in his own name along with virus protection etc. Clearly he does not have admin rights.

I don't want to limit his use by time, but only allow him (say) 50MB a day. My searching has struggled to find appropriate software.

Can anyone advise how to ration broadband?

Some software to stop him eating so much would be nice too!

www.sharewareconnection.com

Do I need to know what a microsoft ISA browser is?

564598 2007-06-30 10:22:00 50MB?? Wow, I mean I don't play games online or have a p2p program and don't download new software either but even I use more that 100MB a day. Gmail itself takes a chink out everytime you log on. Go easy on the lad/lass:D

Remember, they'll choose your retirement home:lol:

and if he doesn't like that, he can try living elsewhere.

Edit: Sorry I forgot we aren't living in the 70's any more.

564600 2007-06-30 10:42:00 Rationing bandwidth is not really a practical solution from my point of view. It just creates more problems especially if he has used up his quota for the day or week, and than needs to do some research for an assignment and other school work.
No internet access = no work done = you get the blame for all that.
I would say for you to increase your data cap to maybe 10gb or 15gb and ask him to chip in for the extra cost of the data cap since he is the one using most of it.
But try out that software if you feel like it may work... and remember.. he is a teenager, getting through to them ain't always an easy task.

564601 2007-06-30 10:46:00 RBD, does he have a car and or a cellphone? Tell hi if he doesn't pay his share of the BB bill you will remove his access to both. Cell phones don't work very well after they have been flushed down the toilet.
If that doesn't get his attention, nothing will.

564602 2007-06-30 11:43:00 That software is useless to you unless you are running an ISA Server as that is an extension for an ISA Server, so yes you do need to know what an ISA Server is and by you not knowing what it is I would say you don't.

Did you not note the "For example"? you can set it to whatever you want...

There have been many threads on here about this sort of thing, just use the search function

:D :p That would be the same with every male teen . (speaking from my own experience of being one)

564605 2007-07-01 03:56:00 If I could give him back I would, he isn't mine just living under my roof . There is no chance of him deciding on my retirement!! I have no intention of spending my money to buy more broadband just for him! He has no means to pay me anyway and lets just say he won't be doing many homework assignment . . .

I did try searching but could only find programs that limit time on the net . That may have to be the answer . If he uses his hour a day tough .

Personally I think 50MB a day is pretty good for a laptop and broadband he can use for free . I mean that's 1500MB a month and he isn't he only person in the house that uses it . It would've been nice if someone allowed me a free laptop, but that's not going to happen .

I'll keep searching . If anyone can offer help that would be great .
