564518 2007-06-30 00:27:00 I recently switched to Xnet - great pricing apparently. I set up my torrents and did occasionally manage to OK speeds nothing special though - but whenever I start a torrent even if it's downloading at 0.5kb/s and not uploading at all my browser and other things seem to be disabled - so it's impossible to load a page and usually times out, I can only solve this by stopping the torrent, going to the page, and then starting the torrent again.

Help?

564519 2007-06-30 03:20:00 Can you give us more information? What torrent settings are you using (specifically the ones relating to number of connections)? Which client? Which OS? Which brand/model of ADSL modem? What do you get from the speedtest here (nzdsl.co.nz)?

The problem is unlikely to be xnet, and is probably an issue with your setup or your modem.

564520 2007-06-30 04:14:00 Im with Bletch, chances are its a modem / router issue.. :) Chilling_Silence (9)
564521 2007-06-30 04:42:00 I get about between 1.2 - 1.9mbs my upload can vary between 70 - 128kbps on that test, I have U.S robotics sure connect 9106 router.

This wasn't happening before I switched (I was just getting trafficked by Telescum). But I did have to change the settings in my router when I switched.

I use uTorrent with Windows XP, have maximum global connections set at 750, maximum peers at 100.

564522 2007-06-30 05:41:00 Try this (www.speedguide.net) and see if it makes any difference.

A mate had the same problem until he ran the TCP optimizer

564523 2007-06-30 06:21:00 Thought I saw a slight difference but it went back to what it was doing before. It won't even let me load 192.168.1.1 properly. Warhog (7975)
564524 2007-06-30 07:49:00 Three ways to test it:
1) Borrow a router from a friend and try it out, see if it persists
2) Take your workstation to a friends place and try it there, see if it still happens
3) Boot something like a Linux LiveCD and see if it still persists

I had a similar modem, basically in the end it just died, any torrents open would kill it, it sucked... :(

564525 2007-06-30 08:16:00 I used a patch to open my Windows max halfopen connections to 80 and set uTorrent's to 50, now downloading WAAAY faster and browser is working perfectly - now to see if stays this way. Warhog (7975)
564526 2007-06-30 08:26:00 Hi there

Just to add to what everyone has already said, yes it sounds very much like a router/modem issue if all you're getting is a 0.5 upload blocking all other traffic.

I too am with Xnet and their performance has always remained constant. I'm only on the 256/128 plan but the connection is very reliable, so I would rule out the ISP as being the issue.

Good luck with solving it.
