564435 2007-06-29 16:08:00 Hi,

This may not be a PC problem but a computer problem all the same :)

Anyway, I was thinking about buying a server to use at home having found out how I can connect it up to my Router and allow it to get the Internet connection from there.

I'd like to use the server to host numerous online games but here lies my problem. Because I don't know what CPU, RAM and HDD (As examples) requirements these games need to run at the highest spec I don't know what kind of spefication server to buy.

So basically is there a way to find out what a games requirements are to run at the highest spec?

Knowing the requirements of games will also allow me to mix and match which ones I host at the same time. For example, if I have a 3GHZ Server I can run 2 games that require 1.5GHZ each to run at optimal performance. Instead of me not knowing what the games actually require and just running one thinking that's all my server can handle. (Note the figures are just examples not and reflection of what I might or need to buy)

Thanks very much,
~Tracer

564436 2007-06-29 20:45:00 I am not sure on the specs you will need, but what is your net connection? The_End_Of_Reality (334)
564437 2007-06-30 01:02:00 You don't actually need a lot of processing power to host games, but a high speed internet connection is crucial. Also how do you intend to attract gamers to your server? Just because its there doesn't mean people will uses it, especially when there are already existing well proven severs running. Also be aware that hosting a game server over the internet will easily eat through your data cap and may become a costly pastime.

If you decide that its a good idea to waste money on a server then get something with a large amount of memory, video card isn't important game server is normally just a DOS prompt.

Running a game server isn't exactly the best idea and it doesn't appear you've thought it through much. Before you spend any money do some more research as your knowledge seems to be very lacking.

564438 2007-07-01 19:08:00 I have thought it through and I know I'd like to host a server. It's not really for the public but instead for me and my Clan so I've allready got players as we'll be hosting our matches etc on there.

I've got all the information I need on how to set it up so I'm fine on that part, all I need to know is what kind of spefication of server to get. I'm on a 16mb Unlimited connection so there should be no problems there.

You say hosting a game isn't very CPU intensive, this brings me back to my question of is there any way to find out how CPU, RAM etc intensive games are?

Thanks,

564439 2007-07-02 06:19:00 What ****ing game are you playing? Pete O'Neil (6584)
564440 2007-07-02 07:17:00 16Mb unlimited connection, well, your not in NZ. I'd use the game server requirements of a current game, then double it, and multiple by the number of games you are going to host. SolMiester (139)
564441 2007-07-02 07:24:00 And before you do anything like setting up a server, make sure you've read the terms you agreed to when installing the game.

Most, if not all games do not allow reverse engineering. That includes altering the log in screen to all you to directly click on an icon to connect to a server.

564442 2007-07-02 08:30:00 16MB might be enough for just a few people to play at once, as long as it's synchronous. Anything less than that either way will make the game choke with possibly as few as three people playing simultaneously. Depending on game type of course. Greg (193)
564443 2007-07-02 09:50:00 16Mb is like a LAN Greg, it will not choke at 3 people! SolMiester (139)
564444 2007-07-02 10:12:00 16Mb is like a LAN Greg, it will not choke at 3 people! It's nothing like a LAN. LANs don't have dozens of hops between all players, nor are each player guaranteed to have the same speed. Plus there's the question of it being adsl or dsl. Greg (193)
