564417 2007-06-29 12:45:00 The 3 consecutive rattling noises last for about 2 seconds. Then, after 4 - 8 seconds, it does the 3 consecutive rattling noises again.

The noise is not loud, but it is quite noticeable when nothing else is making a noise.

Is this a bad sign?

EDIT: Make that 4 or 5 consecutive rattling noises

564418 2007-06-29 12:57:00 Could be, before you lose all your data, remember to backup. jaycom (12478)
564419 2007-06-29 13:44:00 To be on the safe side, I would say very very bad. I assume you've got backup's of everything otherwise this would be a very good time to learn how to do so:D beeswax34 (63)
564420 2007-06-29 13:45:00 It could be anything including a screw that holds the drive in the bay coming loose from vibrations. apsattv (7406)
564421 2007-06-29 13:48:00 Backup Now! would be a good idea :) (just in case) stu161204 (123)

564426 2007-06-29 22:44:00 Backup now, before you do any testing or whatever.
IIRC Smart has to be enabled (via CMOS (did I get it right johnd ?? :p)) which will require a reboot. The harddrive MAY not be wanting to boot anymore
