564121 2007-06-28 22:39:00 Hi fellow F1ers,

I have recently become a fan of the Ubuntu operating system, so have decided that my next laptop will run on Ubuntu.

The problem is I can't find any shops selling computers or laptops with the bare bones, no operating system.

I know I can buy a laptop with vista, and dual boot. I don't like vista, and am not willing to pay for it if I don't use it. Trademe... I'm not sure if I can trust technology from second hand dealers.

Cheers,

Just tell the shop you dont want an OS on it, and they'll reduce the price by $100 or so.. Then install whatever OS on it.

Any decent tech or computer store could build you a PC without an OS.

Laptops are a bit harder as the name brands have windows on them from the factory and can't be removed "easily". There are ways to get them without windows but it can be long process and you have to buy the laptop with windows first and then try get windows cost refunded from the manufacturer.

564127 2007-06-29 02:50:00 Yes you can order a lappy without OS
Most wholesalers will supply your local PC shop with a hardware-only lappy if you ask them.
Having said that, you wont save very much on the price. In fact it may end up being cheaper for you to buy the lappy from some large chain store with XP / Vista whatever on it and just format it.
The prices you can get at large chain stores are often very nearly the same as wholesale cost for the rest of us.
