564658 2007-06-30 19:53:00 PC(1) 'John' is using a Dell with Windows XP Professional ver. 5.1.2600; ip address 192.168.1.100; Node Type Unknown
PC(2) 'Mary' is using an HP with Windows XP Media Center Edition, ver. 2002;ip address 192.168.1.103; Node Type Hybrid

Whenever Mary tries to use START\CONTROL PANEL\ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS\ and attempts to create a Group Object or grant rights she receives the following message in a dialog box:

Failed to save Local Policy Database

There is a Linksys router between both PCs and each has no problem accessing the internet.

However, John can see Mary's name only. John cannot access Mary's shared folder(s). Also, John can ping himself but cannot ping Mary.

On the other hand, Mary can see John's shared folder(s) and can access them but cannot ping John; only herself.

Both can ping the DHCP and DNS servers.

XP Firewall software on both PCs have been turned off.

Neither new PC came with a Windows XP disk. (Darned HP and Dell PCs)

564659 2007-06-30 21:35:00 Is this an actual problem, or a homework problem?

You will find, if you throw the error messsage into google (www.google.com), you will receive quite a few answers :)

564660 2007-07-01 06:08:00 Sorry if I was a simpleton in my example. No, it's not homework. It's my problem (headache). I wrote it this way to make my problem as easy (and informative) as possible.

I tried to look up 'Failed to save Local Policy Database' via Google but all I got was either 'Pay to See' sites or Windowseese gobble-die-goog. Can you help me?

I cannot re-install Windows XP on either PC unfortunately. I wasn't given an installation CD for XP for either PC. :(

On this webpage (www.thetechguide.com) Gareth.de has a solution that may be of help. Try it and let us know. In the meantime I'll check out some other sites.

Incidentally, welcome to PressF1 :)

[addition]: on this page (www.pcreview.co.uk), read the solutions suggested by Steve Winograd (start from the top :))

564662 2007-07-02 04:57:00 It's difficult to get the other user to work with me to solve this problem. However, I followed the link you left for me and read about disabling the two 'Security options' and will post the results ASAP.

Thank you very much for your assistance with my problem.
