565192 2007-07-02 23:58:00 Greetings

I am finding my self using ftp more and more, and i have tried a number of fp clients, and they all seem to be much of a muchness
the one feature i want only appears to be working in dreamweaver

What i want to be able to do is

When i click on a file and tell it to upload, it uploads to the matching directory on the server, respecting my directory structure

Ok you are probably baffled by what i am on about

heres an example

if i have this file structure on my computer

|
-bob
dave.html
jack.html
erasmus.html

|-bill
sam.html
elvira.html
elvis.html

|-brian
heloise.php
ishmael.html

and i only want to put the ishmael file up on to the empty site but i want to retain the directory structure, in dreamweaver all i need do is click on the ishmael file and it will put it up and create the directory structure
But there is no easy way to do this using a standard ftp client

The main reason i want this is that with a standard ftp client I navigate through my local directory structure and find the file i want and click on upload and then i realise i haven't set the remote location to match where i am in the local file tree, and the file has ended uo in the wrong place, with dreamweaver i just don't have to worry about this as the file automatically goe in to the matching place on the remote file tree

If this makes no sense let me know, otherwise please give me a suggestion of a client that can actually do this, thanks

565193 2007-07-03 00:15:00 I think filezilla may be able to do this Rob99 (151)
565194 2007-07-03 00:21:00 I use FlashFXP - not sure if it does exactly what you describe, but it does have a synchronisation feature which accomplishes the same thing

Synchronized browsing allows webmasters to keep local and remote directly listings in synch while browsing.

565196 2007-10-26 04:30:00 Ok I'm dredging this post up

for ftp I am using fireftp which is excellent and it keeps the connection alive until i tell it not to which is brilliant, but I would also like a standalone ftp client

I'm currently trying filezilla, and it's ok, but the connection drops after a minute or 2 of inactivity, i had the same issue with total commander even when it was sending a noop signal
Does any-one have a recommendation of a stand alone ftp client that can actually maintain the connection and not drop it after a few minutes of inactivity?

I think you will find that is to do with the FTP server & not the ftp client.

565198 2007-10-26 05:38:00 umm well then how come the connection stays alive with fireftp on the same sites Morgenmuffel (187)
565199 2007-10-26 05:50:00 Nigel... probably your FireFTP does an auto ping or something to tell the server that you're still busy working. To be honest that's not the best way to make friends with your server owner (wasted bandwidth and server resources).

When I set up hosting for my customers my FTP connection would time out at 5 minutes. A polite request to the server manager to increase it to 15 minutes did it for me.
