565167 2007-07-02 22:52:00 I realise these sort of threads can get tiresome, but after such helpful comments when I was choosing a monitor I thought I would ask for comments on this PC setup (yes, I've decided to buy a PC to go with the monitor!).

It won't be used for anything too strenuous - no games to speak of and some photo editing. I realise I may need more RAM/HDD but I figure I can add what/how much I need later on - it won't cost me any more to add it later.

X-Case Calypso ATX Mini Tower 400W
Asus M2N-MX Motherboard
AMD Ahtlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0GHz
Seagate Barracuda ST3160815AS 160GB
Asus DRW-1814BL DVD Writer
A-Data 1x1GB DDR2-800
Asus EN6200LE TC256/TD Video Card

Thanks a lot

565168 2007-07-02 23:16:00 Looks alright to me, for a basic system. That mobo has onboard video btw.

Dont know how good A-data ram is, I've never used it.

I know that a video card isn't really necessary for (e.g.) photo editing, but I figured that if it was only going to cost $70 it might be worth it to avoid the main RAM being used for graphics. Perhaps I would be better off spending the extra on more RAM?

$690 as it is (from Ascent). Good or not?

565172 2007-07-03 06:24:00 Agree'd change the case or at least the PSU, a decent brand 400w should easily suffice.

Have a look at the ASUS M2A-VM it uses AMD's new 690G chipset and the onboard video is definitely better than any integrated offerings from nVidia and would give the 6200LE a run for its money. The board has a CRT and DVI port and comes with an add in card with a HDMI port.

With the savings you get from dropping the video card consider a better harddrive, if your working with a lot of photos you can easily chew through 160Gb. Also theres nothing wrong with Adata, from memory they offer a fairly decent warranty.

What would you suggest (keeeping to a similar-ish budget)? I have no idea what a decent brand is when it comes to case/PSUs.

Is the only thing wrong with the harddrive the size (ie just a bigger version would be a good bet)? I was thinking of buying a second hard drive later for more space and/or as a backup in case one failed but perhaps I should just pay a wee bit more now.

565174 2007-07-03 07:09:00 If you're not using for working that system is fine although you might wanna consider Intel is having a price cut on its processors in 22nd July.

Monitor? I got Samsung 226BW 22" inch looks for the first time and looks small to me over the time.

Too bad, RAM prices already rise, but luckily I got it before it rises. And now for you the last chance is grab it now since NZD is pretty high.

I use to recommend the Silverstone ST405 to most people who weren't gamers or pc enthusiasts but its recently started creeping up in price and is now over $100. It use to be a very good bargain when it was around $80, its still good value but just a bit expensive for some peoples tastes.

Enermex make good units but there definitely not cheap and probably overkill for your needs. Raidmax, Task and maybe the cheaper Thermaltakes are worth considering. Myself and several friends have had awesome millage out of the 420w and 430w Thermaltake Purepowers so that would probably be my recommendation.

Harddrive choice is only a matter of personal choice there is no difference in performance between the difference sizes. I just thought it would be a good idea to consider whether you think 160Gb will be enough, especially when you can get a 320Gb drive for another $40. Its all up to you have a look at your current usage and make a decision, as you said you can always add another drive later :)

.

That case is too small.

If budget is a consideration then something from Raidmax, but a proper desktop case, not mini anything.
Theres airflow to consider too.
