564886 2007-07-01 23:15:00 My friend refurbished his house and installed Network cables to every single room of his 'new' home. Paid him a visit yesterday and 'inspected' the new installation. :D

Found he is using 'patch panel' to terminate all the cables at the box where he has the ADSL router, phone line, etc. What is this 'patch panel' doing here? :o How does it work?

564887 2007-07-01 23:19:00 A patch panel is simply the other end of the cables in the other room.
Normally you would have a switch/router and your modem nearby.
You can then use short patch cables to route the network where you like.
Many people also route their telephone with a patch panel.

The patch panel is merely a tidy way of organising the "other end" of the cables going to the other rooms. You could achieve the same thing with a whole row of network sockets, however, you can guess that it will take up a lot more space than a patch panel. Patch panels don't do anything special, other than holding all the sockets which the cables are wired into.

564890 2007-07-01 23:48:00 yep
its where all those wall outlets terminate
then you can conect all rooms to each other using a switch or hub (switch is reccomended) then to your server, adsl modem etc

Pretty much most of the patch panels I've ever worked on have been a nightmare of spaghetti .

That's usually the patch cables, rather than the patch panel isn't it. :p My point is that a patch panel is better than a) having a whole heap of cables coming out of the wall with plugs terminated on the end (I've seen this done before!!), or b) having a really big row of normal sockets on the wall.
