564850 2007-07-01 13:09:00 Anyone ever heard of or seen a 'DSL detector'?

Just a small module that you plug into a jackpoint and if it detects DSL sync then it lights an LED to show that DSL is in fact active on the line.

Just a quick test to save setting up a modem etc.

564851 2007-07-01 20:08:00 I have always just used an ADSL router.
No need to set it up with username & password, just plug it in, as they have a DSL / Status light on them and this will start flashing for a few seconds and then go on solid if a DSL signal is detected.

564852 2007-07-03 02:44:00 Hmmm.. that's what I have been doing all this time, but it's a pain to have to set the whole thing up - I was thinking more of a small module with a BT plug on the end that is battery operated - just plug it in and if the LED lights then there is (in theory) DSL on the line.

I have an idea coming on... LOL

How? All you do is plug it in.

564854 2007-07-04 23:18:00 I mean for me as a tech, going out and doing housecalls for people where I don't know the condition of their modem - whether it's dodgy or not.

If I can quickly determine the status of the line - whether DSL is present or not, would save a lot of time and shagging about.

Sure, it's easy enough to plug a modem in - but it means having to carry a modem around with its matching plugpack, and all that takes up space/weight etc.

My thoughts are a small unit about the size of a matchbox that is battery powered and has a simple LED on it to show the presence of DSL sync.

That could be easily added to the small pouch I carry my LAN tester in.

Obviously there is nothing readily available, I'll just have to make my own :D

What would it detect? A carrier? A digital signal of some sort?
