2007-07-01 08:38:00 | hi im new to this forum and have been looking around but havent been able to find a solution to my problem, well my problem is that my pc shuts off whenever i try to either rar files, play games(shuts off after 20 minutes), or convert avi files to dvd format, or use windows media player to burn an mp3 cd, so far i think that cause those things make my process power go into the 90% that could be the cause but i want to get some help from experts before i mess it up even more, let me know if you need more info. | deathracer (11825) | |
2007-07-01 08:43:00 | Hey, just want to clarify, what did you mean by "your pc shuts off"? As in, the whole machine just crashes whenever you launch resource-demanding applications? Cheers :) P.S. Welcome to PF1 :D

2007-07-01 08:44:00 | Hi Deathracer, welcome to PF1. You might want to look at a couple of things such as the cooling fan on your PC. You could also download the HJT file from Speedy's sig and run it then post the results on this forum for a diagnostic. Most of the stuff your doing on your computer is pretty normal and shouldn't be causing it to shut down.

2007-07-01 08:51:00 | What kind of system is it? (CPU, how much ram, what version of windows)? If XP, go to control panel / admin tools / event viewer. Look under system and applications on the left. Any X entries here? When it goes to 90%, what process is showing 90% in Task Manager? If you press ctrl-alt-del or go to start/run and type regedit, do both open? Have u scanned for malware/spyware etc lately? Have u checked, to see if your system is overheating? Are you overclocking? You could download hijackthis in my sig below, put it in its own folder, run it, and click on scan and save a log. Copy and paste the log here.

2007-07-01 09:02:00 | im running windows media center or at least thats what my friend told me when he installed it, its a intel pentium4 with 512ddr2 ram, and i have 2 harddrives one from my old pc and a new sata one, i havent put any additional fans yet so it only has the stock ones and one that the case came with wich is on the side panel of the case, i never used to have this problem but then it just appeared out of nowhere the whole pc just shuts off and it takes me a couple of tries before it can turn on or else it seems like its gonna start but it just doesnt, by the procesing power yes im talking about the one in the task manager, at first i thought it was from overheating but i leave my pc on for days at a time but just today i woke up and my pc was off so i was like:confused: . | deathracer (11825) | |
2007-07-01 10:46:00 | leaving the pc on for days at a time wont necessarily overheat it but running high cpu usage demanding apps can........ you need to install some kinda temperature monitor or perhaps there is one already there ? pop the case open and take a look at the fan/heatsink assembly on top of the cpu if it's clogged with dust that'll be the cause of the shut downs....also could be your GPU (graphics processor - video card) fan IF you have one..... although the advice to run HJT may be of help to identify if you have any kind of nasty in the system i seriously doubt it'd be of help to you in identifying what's shutting off the pc......... also you might like to right clik 'my computer' then goto manage then look under the listings for events/errors.....

2007-07-01 20:15:00 | My money is on overheating, if your PC is overclocked set it back to factory if it is factory check the CPU fan and see if that is spining and is not clogged up with dust. Also get Speedfan (www.almico.com) to monitor the temps (and post here) both at idle and something CPU intensive, go RAR some files will be the best

2007-07-01 20:29:00 | i think it might be overheating cause i installed the program speedfan and fans 2 & 3 have a little flame next to them while the others have a green check., is there a quick fix for now before i go to the store and buy more fans. also i just turned on my pc, i know its summer but thats really something thats weird for me to understand.

2007-07-01 22:11:00 | as I suggested ......open the case and have a look for dust clogging up the fans and heatsinks.......it wont take long and simply putting more fans in wont fix it if theres too much dust in the heatsink on the processor it will still overheat... | drcspy (146) | |
