2007-07-01 05:20:00 | I have, as in a query yesterday concerning IE7, got a new machine. I want to use the old one in Win98 so that I can run a program called Imagineer Technical, a CAD program. It wont run under WinXP, because a needed .dll file is not there. I was running the old machine under XP, reformatted the HDD, and tried to start win98, with the most recent startup disk (my saved disk) that I have. It gets part way through the process, and it reports: "The diagnostic tools were successfully loaded to drive D: File not found. To get help, type HELP and press enter." Then it shows a dos prompt for A:. When I do this I get "Bad command or file name." The readme file on the startup disk lists 25 files, which are on the disk including 3 hidden ones. There is no help file. Does anyone know what the missing file is and where I can get it? Brucem

2007-07-01 07:38:00 | and WHY are you using some 'startup disk' to fire up win98 ? was there some problem with it ?.... it should boot ordinarily into an installed operating system unless theres some problem. If you have a problem you could boot to the a: prompt then type in c: then tap enter then type in cd windows then tap enter then type in cd command then tap enter then type in scanreg /fix and the system will run a registry check if theres any problem with that it should fix it......otherwise you could type in scanreg /restore then revert it back to a previous registry entry.... whats the reason you are using a startup disk ? | drcspy (146) | |
2007-07-01 07:39:00 | another way to do this would be to download microsoft virtualpc 2007 (free ! ) and install that on the xp machine then install win98 'within' xp to run as a virtual pc......that way you can run any 98 apps that wont for whatever reason run in xp..... | drcspy (146) | |
2007-07-01 13:03:00 | It sounds (if I read your post correctly) that you are trying to install Win98 from a floppy disk only, or is it from a cd? ( you cant do it that way, its not a bootable cd like XP, you need the floppy first to install the cd driver ). Sorry, but your post is unclear on this point. If you're after a bootdisk (floppy) for Win98 reinstallation, go here: http://www.bootdisk.com/ It sounds like your original floppy is possibly corrupted.

Not true... the Windows 98 Setup CD is bootable, when it starts up it will ask 1) Boot from CD 2) Boot from hard disk If you choose boot from CD it will then ask do you want to start the PC with CD ROM support, if you select this it will automatically load the cd drivers for you and you can either decide to start Win 98 setup or just plain DOS for whatever you require.
