566065 2007-07-05 08:06:00 I'm on dial-up, about to switch to Xnet broadband (thanks to recommends on this forum).

I'd like to monitor my upload and download data usage over say a week to see how much I actually use while browsing etc.

Any tips on software that will help me with this? I don't need one of those "how fast am I going right now" thingies.

Much appreciation :)

566066 2007-07-05 09:02:00 Netmeter from www.metal-machine.de
is pretty good - will count uploads and sownloads on an hourly, daily, weekly, monthly basis.
It will also predict your monthly total in advance and if you enter your cap, it will advise you when you are getting close to the limit.

Did I also say it was freeware ??

566068 2007-07-05 09:15:00 You can always go to your ISP and login with username & password an check your usage, that's what I do and have found it handy when considering changing to new plans, tho they are all much of a muchness. mark c (247)
566069 2007-07-05 09:32:00 Thanks. Paradise's usage stats only show hours-used per billing period for dial-up.

Decibel's NetMeter works great - just what I need.

Cheers

566070 2007-07-05 10:55:00 prolly stating the obvious here - but what you're data useage is on dialup will be a lot less than what you can expect to use on broadband... it's the nature of the beast! :) for example, suddenly you can click on video clips and see them play instantly! The results won't be that accurate as once you are on broadband you are likely to chew through a lot more data simply because you can. ;)

When you sign up with Xnet, choose what speed you want and set the cap at 2GB or so to start with and monitor that with Xnet's Usage Monitor, a handy little utility to download.

If it looks like you are going to use more than what limit you have chosen then either increase the limit or spend the rest of the month at a slower speed. If you choose a higher limit than you use you will only be charged for that.
