565665 2007-07-04 10:16:00 One of my DVD writers on my PC has chosen this most inconvenient moment to die.... I don't want to be without the PC while it is fixed/replaced (though maybe this is a quick operation?) so what alternative is there? Bryden (4161)
565666 2007-07-04 10:19:00 Buy another one put it in yourself.

Its not that hard.

It takes less than 5 mins to replace.

Just turn it off, open the case, unscrew the one thats in there, pull it out / remove the power / IDE cable.

Put the new one in. Screw the new one in.

Reconnect the power and the IDE cable.

Thats it.

Just remember to jumper it properly (on slave or master).

565668 2007-07-04 23:12:00 I recommend the LG range of DVD writers. I have been using them myself and installing them exclusively in clients' computers and to date have had no issues. Faultless reading and writing and a nice build quality. supertrouper (6665)
565669 2007-07-05 05:02:00 SATA interface would be the way to go these days, would it? rumpty (2863)
565670 2007-07-05 05:14:00 SATA is ok, but you dont really notice the diff these days in burning anyway.

IDE is still good enough.

565671 2007-07-05 20:37:00 If your m/board has SATA connectors you might as well get a SATA burner. It won't be any quicker than an IDE drive, but they're easier to install.

A lot of the new boards these days only have 1 IDE connector and, in my case, the IDE cables didnt reach the DVD burner.

565672 2007-07-13 22:30:00 DVD writers will read CD-ROMs won't they? Chris Randal (521)
565673 2007-07-13 22:39:00 yes, and write to recordable CDs. trig42 (11325)
565674 2007-07-14 04:19:00 DVD writers will read/write to CD's and DVD's and to DVD-Ram if it supports it.

And play CD's/DVD's.

Some also support lightscribe.

Basically DVD writers will do anything a CD can do, + DVD.

Altho, the SATA version of this burner (DRW-1814BLT), claims its 5x faster than IDE.

So, some SATA burners maybe faster than IDE.
