565408 2007-07-03 09:48:00 this from afar (HB - BoP) - a relative who's probably 20% computer literate, has a problem with XP - motherboard and processor need repair/replacing according to a local tech - my question is simply, "do the Pressf1 techs see this as a sound diagnosis? - quote to fix $200-$300 - computer was purchased 2 years ago from Bond&Bond - have no idea re the specs - your comments are, and will be greatly appreciated jayal (1291)
565409 2007-07-03 09:56:00 Depends whats it doing, how often its doing whatever.

And when it happens/what were they doing at the time.

What are the symptoms??

We cant tell u much without knowing whats happening or not happening.

ie: Is it crashing or going at all etc...We need more info

Nah. It would be either MB or CPU, not both.

Both only if the thing was so old the MB type couldn't be purchased anymore but you just said its only 2.

565411 2007-07-03 10:27:00 thanks Speedy/Pctech, believe it or not an email arrived while i was checking your replies, the "complainant" has done the deal $300 worth so i guess that ends that - seems happy with the change - some people can be a little impatient/impetuous - many thanks for your quick answers jayal (1291)
565412 2007-07-03 11:05:00 Yes, relatives from afar do tend to be somewhat impatient, before they seek help (or while they await help) from a more knowledgeable relative. Last year, my stepfather wanted to install Adobe Reader 7 on his ME computer, was told 7 won't run on ME, so he got the guy to install XP and give him a RAM upgrade (he only had 120MB to start with )

To this day I don't know why he wanted 7, Adobe Reader 6 was doing all that he wanted

So I would think that there was 128 Mb Ram less on board video using 8 Mbytes?

565414 2007-07-03 19:28:00 So I would think that there was 128 Mb Ram less on board video using 8 Mbytes?Correct. The rest of the specs on his computer (including the RAM upgrade) are at the lower end of passable for XP (I think the CPU approx 1GHz). If he has asked me first I would have advised against XP based purely on how slow the system would run (and apparently is is quite slow now, I haven't seen it as they are on the other side of the island) Myth (110)
