565599 2007-09-21 00:26:00 I think a lot has to do with the model and make of TV/LCD as well.
I have a Viewsonic 32" wide Screen, with a PC connected to it Via a Standard 15 pin VGA.
I Looked at several LCD's in the shops and while they all played DVD's OK, as the demo's do, when a PC was connected it was :yuck:

I finally had two choices, either Acer or Viewsonic. I went for the Viewsonic as it was cheaper from one of my vendors. The Picture is reasonable both on TV and PC, TV is better, The PC jumps around auto changing at startup until it settles on 800 x 600.Here (www.imagef1.net.nz) is a screen capture of PressF1 from the TV,its actually a bit clearer that it shows here. and Here (www.imagef1.net.nz(Small).JPG)
is the whole TV - the pictures rubbish here but you get the idea. - its very readable and clear from the other side of the lounge, about 5 mtrs away. The picture is not bent, its only my cheap cam that makes it look that way.

565600 2007-09-21 01:29:00 I'm not in front of a machine with an ATI adaptor in it so I'm not sure if the wording is exactly correct on these instructions, but give it a go.

In the ideal situation you will want to end up with your PC outputting the native resultion of your television, ie 1366x768
Many LCD televisions will scale the image even if you send the native resolution, in which case you may find 1280x720 is a better setting in terms of picture quality.
The television is likely to not be passing EDID resolution information to your video card due to the HDMI adaptor, hence only getting 4:3 modes available.

Look in your Catalyst Control Center properties for the 'Digital Panel Properties' container.
In there you should have 'Reduce DVI frequency on high-resolution displays' and 'Alternate DVI operational mode' turned off.
I would suggest using 'Centered timings' under the 'Image Scaling' section.

Now, my next suggestion is to use the Troubleshoot section to 'Force 720p'
This will add widescreen modes to the displays manager section.

These sorts of problems plague HTPC users all the time, take a look at www.thegreenbutton.com/forums for more advice. This site is for Media Center users, however the solutions offered will still be applicable to your situation.

565601 2007-09-21 03:01:00 Hey wainuitech
That screenshot looks pretty good

Windows app's & the Win desktop look pretty bad on my TV
The text/fonts look terrible yet movies, avi's etc look great
Even the menus in Mediaportal look good yet Win itself looks bad
Did you have to do anything to the fonts or font smoothing??

You'll get a laugh from this - For ages until I could afford a LCD, we had a standard CRT 21" heap of junk TV from the warehouse plugged in.

Nope no settings were changed, I did try setting the PC for 1024x768, but while it made the picture clearer and sharper, The text size was to small to read from anything further away than 1 mtr.
Not much point if you wanted to sit on the couch. Have not tried making the text bigger though hmmmm weekend project.
