566390 2007-07-06 05:24:00 my computer is supposed to have 256 mb of ram. it was going really slow so i checked and it says there is only 192 mb ram why is this? nerd (109)
566391 2007-07-06 05:29:00 Welcome to PressF1.

The most likely explanation is that you have onboard video, with 64MB allocated for its use. 192+64 --> 256.

566392 2007-07-06 05:29:00 Youre most probably using a 64 mb onboard videocard, which will use system ram.

192+64 = 256

Snap :D

566393 2007-07-06 05:33:00 do you know how to fix this? nerd (109)
566394 2007-07-06 05:37:00 You cant its normal.

Dunno if getting a separate card will fix it, most probably wont.

You could most probably lower the amount in the BIOS but this may or may not be a good idea.

566395 2007-07-06 05:38:00 ok thanks for ur help what ram do you think i should buy next? nerd (109)
566396 2007-07-06 05:41:00 That depends on what kind of ram it takes.

Installing more ram would help tho.

You could get a separate card and /or more ram.

Depends what u use the computer for. ie: Just browsing / games etc

566397 2007-07-06 05:43:00 mostly games my computer isnt that good tho i play old games like stronghols nerd (109)
566398 2007-07-06 05:51:00 Adding a video card would free that 64 MB . But that's probably not the best way to go .

Games tend to want lots of "main" memory which the CPU can use, and video memory (which is just part of the main memory which is reserved by the BIOS configuration) .

You should be able to add another 256MB stick of memory fairly cheaply . That's likely to give more speed improvement than just releasing 64MB .

I suspect that your computer seems slower because you have been using faster computers at school . ;)
