567863 2007-07-11 01:15:00 Thanks to Vince in the other topic to bringing this to my attention:

www.techsupportalert.com

(top one is his 1st reccomendation, 2nd is his 2nd)

Best Free Anti-Virus Software :
Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic
AVG Antivirus 7 Free Edition

Best Free Adware/Spyware/Scumware Remover :
Microsoft's Windows Defender program
Spyware Terminator

Best Free Firewall :
Kerio Personal Firewall
Comodo firewall

I'm iffy after reading that the programs I use (ZoneAlarm, ad-aware, spybot search and destory) are rated near last (with the exception of AVG) or no longer "cut it"

I do feel ZoneAlarm isn't cutting it anymore, but it's the one that was recommended to be a while ago at these forums.

Does anyone use any of the above listed programs and would you recommend them? It's time for a change, and I don't know which one to get.

He claims they're all free (no, I'm never going to pay for any security) so could I get some advice on which out of all the categories, should I be using? Unless someone says otherwise, I'll prolly be going with this random guys top recommendation.

567864 2007-07-11 01:21:00 I used to use AVG, but got the free 1 yr nod32 now, use defender but dont go to suspect sites really, and didnt like Kerio UI, so use comodo instead though some of the firewall rules require advanced knowledge to use. SolMiester (139)
567865 2007-07-11 01:28:00 Note that he said that Avira AntiVir Personal Edition does not check emails for viruses, only the paid version.

I consider this to be extremely risky considering that emails are the major source of viruses, trojans, etc on a lot of people's computers. In my view it is essential to have an AV that detects and deals with infected emails.

As for Kerio, I like and used to use the older free version but haven't used later versions as I didn't like the nags. My current preferred firewall is Sygate for myself and an older version of Zone Alarm for other people's computers.

Haven't tried Windows Defender so can't comment on that one.

You got that right .

Even after I had given Mirc permission, I had to add 7 entries in Network Manager to get the thing to dcc lol .

One annoying habit Comodo has, is blocking the Windowsupdate site . I had to tick one or two of the options under Advanced, for Windowsupdate to work .

But something screwed up the other day .

Unticking one or both of these options, I still couldnt get the updates, to appear on the Windowsupdate site .

I dont know what happened with Comodo (I didnt change anything) .

So, in the end I uninstalled Comodo .

Which fixed the Windowsupdate site error (it kept on bringing up a misconfigured proxy/firewall error - Comodo was blocking it) .

And even if u allow some programs, Comodo will still block some ports .

So, I'll wait for V3 of Comodo, to come out, and see if its any better .

567867 2007-07-11 01:49:00 So has anyone else tried :

Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic

and

Kerio Personal Firewall

and have anything good to say about them?

I just got Spyware Terminator and am getting Ad-ware 2007.

567868 2007-07-11 01:52:00 From a few sites, I've read about Ad-aware 20007 its slow and buggy.

Its worse than 2006.

And people say its crap. Forget about installing it.

Nope never tried Avira or Kerio.

567869 2007-07-11 01:54:00 Also, it's $100NZD for ZoneAlarm Pro for 3 pcs for a year. Is this any good? I heard the Pro version was awesome, and I'd go half with my bro in it. I assume it's better than any free firewalls, and better than any thing else?

Also, is the full "suite" any good? Because atm, it's cheaper than the Pro, but I dont want another system hog (norton :P)

EDIT: So does Spyware Terminator remove adware as well?

I wouldnt pay $100 for ZA .

And no, its not the best firewall . Comodo would be better and its totally free .

But Comodo can be a bit tricky to configure .

Dont know, never used it .

Dont get too carried away with Anti-spyware programs . You dont have to install / use every Anti-spyware program around .

Haha, that's laughable at how crap the free version of ZA is compared to the full version.

ZA Pro score: 19,5/27
Comodo score: 9,5/27

And really, I'd only be paying $50 (half with my bro)

BUT look how old it is... March 11 2006. Its out of date.

Things HAVE improved.

And thats based on Comodo 1.1, which is now upto 2.4 soon to be version 3.
