FS at 5120x1600 . . . (Updated with photos )

UPDATE: Matt and I took some photos from my mobile phone . . . scroll down to see them

Pics soon, but just wanted to again prove the theory about FSX (and FS9) being very CPU bound, and infinitely scaleable at the same time

We finally took delivery of "Uber1", our 2008 benchmark PC this week . I'll bore you with the specs:

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Quad @ 2 . 66Ghz, overclocked to 3 . 06Ghz
2GB of XMS 800Hmz DDR2 RAM
2x WD Raptor 10K 150GB HDs in RAID 0 config
XFX 8800GTX Ultra XXX overclocked to 2300Hmz (out of the box by XFX), 768MB DDR3
Creative X-Fi Ultimate Sound Card, Logitech Z4 2 . 1 speakers

XP Pro SP2, usual tweaks, 30 services killed off
FSX SP1, koorby-tuned
nVidia settings are nHancer tweaked, pretty much all maxxed out except AA set to 8QS

2x Samsung 305T 30" LCD monitors, each 2560x1600x32@60Hz, dual-link DVI x2 for total single desktop of 5120x1600

FSX runs like a dream with pretty much all sliders maxxed, getting about 30FPS locked - unlocked it can jump to 60-70FPS depending on how much is going on at once .

We saw no difference in performance running at lower resolution (i . e . 2560x1600) or using a lower spec video card (tried an 8800GTS 512MB, same FPS essentially) .

Initial load of an FSX flight is about 20 seconds, subsequent loads about 7 seconds - those Raptors are simply outrageous drives!

Bottom line: throw the best CPU and disk you can at FSX - video cards are mostly just along for the ride, and you'll only need top-end cards to support the DVI bandwidth required for super-high resolutions .

I would imagine that FSX would perform just as well if the resolution was scaled to 10240x3200, which is possible with a 4 monitor setup and SLI . That would be 60 inches of sweet mother-of-god FSX loving, but huge overkill LOL!

Will take pics of Uber1 and some screenies when we get a chance ok?

EDIT: We had to clock back the quaddie QX6700 to the default 2 . 66Ghz, since FSX was locking up, and when we used the ASUS AI-NOS clocking utility it was causing BSODs for both XP and Vista . That CPU is so damn fast at stock speeds anyway, the difference would be neglible . It runs a cool 45c at stock speed under load, but at even 10% OC'd was generating 68c temps, which really makes the whole system unstable (and screws our warranty as well )

Also, the first XFX 8800GTX Ultra XXX fried itself on day 2, had to DOA it back to the system builder for a replacement .

FSX seems to be spreading threads evenly across the 4 cores as well . . . nice .

Also got a few more FPS by doing a complete defrag twice, which also sped up loading times .
