2007-07-08 23:57:00 | Hi there About week or two ago I went and purchased a Compaq v3209 laptop from DSE. Just recently I noticed that when ever (often but not always) I scroll through some ebooks or surf the net there would a very quiet yet some what high pitched buzz sound/noise generated from where the CPU is at. The buzz sound that I'm talking about sounds like electric buzzing noises that you would hear from putting 2 wires too close together when there is current going through them, obviously not as loud. Most often its when I scroll through an ebook or site that would generate the noise, if I dont scroll, no noise. The noise is more noticeable (and annoying) during night times as common day noises blocks buzzing sound. Also its more noticeable after some hrs of use, eg if boot from a cold boot, everything sounds and runs perfect, its only after some usage it may then starts to create the buzz noise. Also just last night my hdd started clicking every 10-20 seconds, it scared the hell of me as I know this does not mean good news. However this have not happened again. So I was wondering should I be worried about this? I'm thinking of taking it back to DSE to have it checked though wanted to ask here before going through it. Because the buzz noise does not always occur thus I'm worried that if I take it back to DSE I or they wont be able to recreate the buzz noise. Or that if the laptop is sent to the DSE service department they will just sent it back with nothing repaired or changed. So yeah just want some comments or suggestions. Thanks

2007-07-09 00:17:00 | Do you still have the problem if you plug something into the headphone jack? I have come scross several laptops with this issue; as far as I can tell it's always been caused by either the video controller or the mouse/touchpad controller interfering with the soundcard (inadequate shielding?), and the sound is actually coming from the laptop speakers. Plugging something into the headphone jack cuts off the speakers so you can check. Note that you can't just mute it from within windows - as the problem is hardware-based, a software-based mute will have no effect.

The explanations on the internet around it claim it has to do with some sort of piezoelectric effect with some of the circuitry, though exactly what I'm not too sure. I have the same issue on my laptop. There's a fix here whivh works reasonably well: forum.tabletpcreview.com | somebody (208) | ||
2007-07-09 00:53:00 | Thanks for the quick replies, atleast now I'll know what to search for on the net. As for the first suggestion regarding putting something into the headphone jack. Just tried, sadly the sound is still there. As for the piezoelectric fix, my system is an AMD turion x2, after a quick look through that post, it seems turion should not have this problem, though will take a more indepth look after this post. More comments or suggestions are welcome, regarding to this problem or even to the DSE service centre. Thanks again.

2007-07-10 11:32:00 | i had/have the exact same problem with a hp dv6000 series, rang the twats at hp and after explaining the noise, they were certain it was a software error so first got me to re-install sound drivers which suprise suprise didnt cure it, then they told me to do a full destructive system recovery which would certainly fix it but alas it did not so wiped all my programmes for no reason, and eventually admitted it must be hardware and the previous steps are what they always use to resolve most errors, and at that stage got around to giving me the address for the service centre where it is at this moment hopefully getting fixed :) is yours still under warranty? id suggest getting them to fix it if it is, but make sure you ring the helpline up first and get the case number so it is done under warranty...
