567524 2007-07-10 05:13:00 I think the poster's problem is that the Control Panel list which allows sounds to be associated with events doesn't have "Standby" as an event. So no sound can be linked with it. ;)

Yes, correct. The dilemma is as Graham says, there is no Standby as an event. But remember that there IS a sound, and I want to get rid of it or change it.

567525 2007-07-10 05:14:00 No Speedy, my question has not been answered, and it would be nice if you could be polite rather than flippant.

Yer whatever dude dont have a hernia.

567526 2007-07-10 05:16:00 is this the same sound as when windows shuts down? Never really heard of a standby sound before, sounds odd.

You may be on to something. If WinXP pc's do not have a standby sound, then perhaps it is linked to Wizmo (www.grc.com).
I'll go to the Wizmo site and hunt around for sounds that may be linked to the wizmo's.

[edit] I think I found it. There is section whereby Wizmo can be silenced. If it works I will report back.

The hernia is your's but I doubt if you can see that.

567528 2007-07-10 05:24:00 There will be a way ... but obviously not an obvious one. ;)

With great care, a look in the registry might be productive. Search for occurrences of another event's name and its associated sound; then look for occurrences of "Standby" in a similar type of entry.

(How can we associate "silence" with the event "Insults" here?)

567529 2007-07-10 05:24:00 Is the Standby sound unique to Standby? It might be possible that the sound is actually associated with another task, such as Restore Down, Device Disconnect or something like that, perhaps?

Try going through and listening to all the sounds in Sound and Audio Properties and see if you can identify it . You never know, you might get lucky . :)

567530 2007-07-10 05:30:00 from the wizmo site:

Since Wizmo is usually not seen, it generates a soft sound to indicate its performance of a task. This sound may be suppressed by placing the "quiet" command early in Wizmo's command list.
Example: wizmo quiet desktop

so yup, looks like it's a wizmo sound and not native to win.

That did it. I have used Wizmo since Win98, so I thought all pc's had a Standby sound. All it took was to insert the word "quiet" in the Wizmo command line. BTW, I have put Wizmo on several friend's pc's and they all like it. Not essential but its better than having to go into "Start" to Shutdown, Standby, Hibernate.

quiet — suppress the "Gibson sigh" Wizmo sound

567533 2007-07-10 05:41:00 Graham - thanks for the comment - and the humour  .
It all makes sense to me now, why my question was not understood .

For those who have never heard of Wizmo, have a look:
. grc . com/wizmo/wizmo . htm" target="_blank">www . grc . com
I would think many PF1ers would find it a useful addition . It downloads in a nanosecond or two .
