567136 2007-07-11 06:53:00 Does it make any difference if you enter "ipconfig.exe" rather than just "ipconfig"?

It shouldn't, I think, but ... ;)

In DOS, typing a command XXX (with no extension) would cause a lookup, in turn for XXX as an internal command (that is, built in to the command.com DOS interpreter), as XXX.BAT, a batch file, then XXX.COM, then XXX.EXE executable files. (the files have to be in the current directory, or in the PATH).

So cmd.exe is working to the extent that it hasn't found the executable, and is giving the error message. I wonder where ipconfig.exe actually is? Is it in \windows\system32\ or in \windows\system\ ?

567137 2007-07-11 21:16:00 ipconfig is in sys32 folder
the only way the command works now is when I manually go into window/system32 folder and type ipconfig there...

and now I can't seem to figure out how the "lookup" thing works
because obviously it's looking in the wrong place or something...

567138 2007-07-12 05:32:00 just ran spybot and ad-aware and they came up with nothing
tried xp's system restore and still doesn't work after gone back in time...
also even when I go into safe mode and run-cmd.. the commands doesn't work
I've scanned the comp to check for xp's original files and nothing was missing or corrupted..

anything else I should try?

567141 2007-07-12 09:43:00 Do a search for cmd.exe and see where it is.
You should have only one copy and it should be in the system32 folder.

Also, just for a laugh, run ver at the cmd prompt and tell us what version it is.

567142 2007-07-12 09:55:00 Try using a virus scan and see what happens. A bitdefender will be nice, try the trial period one and see what happens. PedalSlammer (8511)

567144 2007-07-13 07:20:00 Every time I do a complete burn-down and reinstall of XP-Pro with SP-2, I cannot access the command line either .

Maybe this is what you're experiencing .

I have gone to START>>PROGRAMS>>ACCESSORIES, and found the C:\ prompt and right click and send to desktop option . I then dragged it into a folder I renamed UTILITIES and added a custom icon to it .

From there I can do anything I want in command mode . . but the other way will not work any more .

Suspect it has something to do with SP-2 . . but not positive .

Always type EXIT in the last line to command the C:\ away .

From the olden days of open and closed files protocols, I recommend always exit but not "X"ing out the window .

Keeps things neater that way .
