2016-02-20 05:05:00 | Ok heres a little exercise for you Geeks and Techs out there. My faithful old Win7 Desktop machine has decided to turn itself off without any prompting. The turnoff is most undignified, the equivalent of just turning the power off. There is no BSOD, or lockup, and if you turn it back on it starts normally with no messages about a malfunction. Specy tells me: The CPU is running between 48°C and 54°C The Motherboard is a Gigabyte m68sm-s2L The Power Supply is unknown, because I havent pulled the whole thing to pieces yet but I have it down as a suspect. Anyway, is there a recognised procedure when dealing with this problem. Oh, only the normal one beep at POST. A chocolate fish for those who guess the problem correctly. :D

It wont be shutting down due to overheating, because if it was it wouldn't start right away, the CPU inbuilt safety would have to cool down first 5- 10 minutes later. |

2016-02-21 20:35:00 | Motherboard could be suspect as it fits the Bad Capacitor time frame en.wikipedia.org Few weeks ago had this problem bulging and leaking caps, fell over in a few days but had various warnings (Windows 10) Also have another comp that had problems, after closer inspection with a magnifying glass of the board shows it has a few bulging caps This comp fits this time frame

2016-02-21 21:11:00 | Same thing happened to me a week ago after an update....shut down three times, twice while unattended and once while my wife was just preparing to go online. I have Win 7 as well on a 6 year old set-up. I fiddled with the Power Options (shutting down, standing by etc) set them to never and haven't had a problem since. Just a thought.....?

2016-02-23 02:39:00 | Thanks Guys and Gal for your input. It looks close to Chocolate Fish time because Ive now removed the suspect power supply and opened it up only to find the classic blown caps situation. Ok, so I dive into my spares and pull out a perfectly good 300w power supply only to find it has a 20 pin Motherboard plug and the Motherboard has a 24 pin socket. Now I seem to recall this isnt an issue, but I cant remember clearly, so need help with this one. Then the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. :)
