2016-02-20 03:19:00 | My technologically challenged neighbour is having problems with apparent dropouts on her ADSL. I don't want to contaminate this thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) so I've started another. She says "my router keeps stopping". This appears to be happening both on wireless and a wired connection. This is not an issue I'm up to speed with as it never seems to happen to me. My questions are: How to do I isolate the problem? i.e. Is it the ISP, the line, the router or something else? What tools are there I can use? I'm next door, so if it was the line I'd be expecting the same issues, right? Any suggestions gratefully received.

2016-02-20 03:56:00 | I have had the same problem it appears to be heat causing it. Seem to have eliminated it with a pack of frozen peas in a tea towel. | Arnie (6624) | |
2016-02-20 04:11:00 | Mine stopped a few hrs ago, because I think Vodafone were having probs. But it's OK now Could be driver issues too. If it's only happening on one PC. Or where they are, if they're using wireless. The modem may need an update

2016-02-20 04:42:00 | She's with Trustpower. I've a suspicion the problems only started after she shifted, so it could be an iffy router or just Trustpower technical issues. This is the same neighbour who had cooking foil over the fuse board to protect the router from the radiation, so I treat anything she says with some suspicion. We've already moved the router to a totally different location and everything seemed OK for a while nut now she is reporting problems again. I'm seeing her tomorrow arvo to check it out.

2016-02-20 05:04:00 | Go back to basic trouble shooting. Start with things you have control Over. 1. If possible change the Router to a known good working modem / Router -- Does the problem still exist after 24-48Hours ? If so then its not a router problem. 2. If the problem still exists try changing cables from the router to the output ( wall/Floor connection) - Does the problem still Exist ? If it does then there's a good chance it's the supplier, not the equipment, esp if its fixed & Wireless causing problems -- On a side note -- Have a look at the Modem/Router logs, see if there's any drop outs in the time its meant to have been not working.. Over the last week, had 3 different customers all with the same problem BUT not the same solution. Customer 1 & 3 After changing every device, including using one of my testing Modem/Routers, testing on a different Laptop, cabling, after they had been ringing Spark for several times, after getting hold of someone who actually could understand, Spark FINALLY admitted they had a problem - roughly 1 hour later everything came back to life and working solid on original equipment. Customer 2. Finally Spark sent out a guy from Chorus -- the problem was tracked down to a fault in the line connecting to the house. At the end of the day it all boils down to testing with known good hardware, making sure the problem is not local/your equipment, out side of that the responsibly falls back onto the supplier who ever the ISP is. :) Customer 2 was really pissed, as Spark had said it was their old modem / Router ( they couldn't wait for me to get there the following day to put in a test unit) , so they went and brought a new one, just under $200 and there was nothing wrong with the original.

2016-02-20 20:25:00 | "Router keeps stopping ... happens on wired and wifi" Get her to grab you when it happens, so you can have a look. There's a good chance it's something like DHCP crashing on the router, which would give those symptoms. See if your device can join the WiFi when she says it happens. If you subsequently cannot, then it's the router and not her internet connection. If you can get onto the router, can you get online? If not, what error does Chrome give you when you try to go to pressf1.co.nz ? Easy to check, easy to rule things out :)

I'm supposed to be seeing her this afternoon, but whether we'll get a convenient incident is anyone's guess. I'm planning to take a working router and my laptop, so I should be able to check a few things out. |

2016-02-22 03:19:00 | How'd it go?Not much to report yet. She was late getting home which meant we didn't have much time. It also didn't help that she didn't know the username and password of the router so I couldn't get into it. It wasn't admin/admin. :) I was reluctant to do a hard reset because I didn't know if Trustpower had made some specific settings. We ran out of time to try the router I took with me. I left her with specific instructions as to what to note down if it fails again, and she is going to talk to Trustpower to see if they will front up with a replacement router. Her current router is a Netcomm - didn't think to note the model. | Tony (4941) | |
