1416120 2016-02-17 01:02:00 I haven't had a full tower in 20 years but I'm getting old and can't do much with my computers because it's so cramp. I also have a regular power supply they made 5 years ago with all the wires which is a bag of worms. So would it be better for me to get a full tower and the new power supplies where you only use the wires you need? lostsoul62 (16011)
1416121 2016-02-17 01:38:00 A modular would be tidier. I put one in my new build here. The only thing that's in it is a DVD, and the ssd lol. That's it. Nothing else

It's definitely a lot tider than the other 2 here. Well I cant install anything else from the front anyway. It's only got 1 5.25 bay on it

I don't know what you mean because there are many different types of modular computer cases. I can't use just one bay because I have one hard drive for the OS and another 2 for data and backup?

or just cable tie all the unused wires together .

Modular: I think he meant modular power supply ? where you plug in the just the cables you need .
Even then you still need to cable tie the wires, they are often rather long .

Some tower cases, seemingly a few of the more expensive name brands, are a poorly thought out nightmare to work on/in . You wont know how stupid some design issues are until you start putting all the components in there .
eg, scewdriverless cases where the hd holders are not secure, un-usuable screwless vid card case clamp , HD trays where the HD cable position wasnt considered at all & pushes up against the case side, psu removal needing the CPU fan to be removed 1st .
yep,all that was my previous tower case . :badpc:

1416124 2016-02-17 02:06:00 I didnt say you had to use one bay. Yup modular power supply like this

The PSU on the bottom is modular. The cables that came with this were too stiff / long. I replaced them with more flexible cables. The only cable that came with it, is the longer 24 pin in this pic. The rest (there's only 2 of them, 2 sata power cables) are flexible cables

The front cables are hidden, on the other side, inc the front audio (I put them in from the top and they come out from the bottom of the mobo). They were just long enough to plug in

But this is MATX not full tower

1416125 2016-02-17 06:10:00 I know what your talking about on the stiff/long cables and they have to be replace. Also the cases can be a real pain. I have 2 desktops that I'm not very happy with the layout of the cases. You really have to do research on the cases. I also think that putting in SSD drives nice and neat and a power supply with only the cables you need would be a big help. I guess I just need the right case. Just a lot of research. lostsoul62 (16011)
1416126 2016-02-17 06:59:00 Only brought this case because there's 3 places you can install an SSD. On the side on the bottom and under the dvd / 5.25 bay. And it had good cable management

I usually check out the case/s online, to see if I can hide wires before I buy it.

Even tho this has only got 1 5.25 bay, I dont really need the DVD. I can copy files across the network, or get whatever online.

Might get one of those 5.25 bay multi function things off Ebay instead, with a card reader on it

1416127 2016-02-18 06:29:00 Yeah, full tower can be a trap. If the PSU is in the usual top rear position, you may find you can't get cables to reach the furthest components, eg the Graphics card, or that there's so little free cable length left that the cables are all worrisome close to the CPU fan, which you don't want them obstructing.

I've got HDDs that are about 0.5mm from blocking RAM slots completely. It's always a bit of a gamble where things will or won't fit together as hoped for.

There should be a simple option to install HDDs on their side instead of horizontally, or uven upright (vertically). There's 3 different planes these components could mount in, and 2 different directions in each of these planes. So why do we only seem to get one direction in one plane only?

1416128 2016-02-18 21:39:00 Did you really mean full tower, they are huge. The most common tower size is actually mid tower and they can be quite big also.
Like Speedy I've gone for a mATX sized tower for this build, I find it a great compromise between the ITX cases I love but sometimes can't fit everything into and the large tower cases I've used in the past.

Mines a Corsair case and I find it fairly easy to work in even with 2 hard drives and a full length GTX 980. Cable management can be tricky but most tower style cases I've worked in are ok if you just take your time and think about it. sometimes it takes me re running cables a few times until I'm happy with it, and mine still doesn't look as tidy as speedies.

1416129 2016-02-18 21:42:00 Yup should have gone MATX for the other 2 here as well. But theyre ATX. At least the wires got to the connections on the MATX. I suppose thats one good thing about them

May build an ITX but some of these arent exactly cheap., And the cases can be dearer than the mobo !
