| 1411231 | 2015-11-11 21:00:00 | For those of us interested in genealogy - https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/ I just found this site referenced on the Forest of Dean forum. NZ soldiers are covered - I checked to see whether one of my uncles was listed, and he is, courtesy of Auckland Museum records. You know you are getting old when you find that your uncles are recorded in a museum... It looks like a useful site, even though it is possible to get NZ WW1 records now, freely available courtesy of the NZ Defence Dept. However, you may find that a relative has added to the records to build up a serviceman's story. |

I found out that my father - a Vietnam vet soldier was living in a Govt convalescence home with other NZ soldiers. Something he never told us or we really knew. Found out other stuff about relatives, e.g. Govt loans, probates, land sales, etc. |

I think the documentation was freed up for public use as part of the Centenary of WW1. Whilst you get access to the original documents on the NZ Archway Archives, which is therefore a richer resource than the Lives of the First World War site (from a NZ perspective), people may start to write stories on the latter site, so it could end up more personal. | John H (8) | ||

One said he didn't think it was anything to remember, another said he just wanted to forget and never think about any of it again. All said pretty much the same. |
