1411188 2015-11-11 00:32:00 ""Ngai Tai ki Tamaki suffered severe Treaty breaches that rendered them virtually landless by the late 19th Century. In the decades following the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, the Crown acquired large tracts of land in the iwi's rohe and confiscated 51,000 acres of land from the East Wairoa area."

Good on us then, unlike certain other countries.

1411189 2015-11-11 02:53:00 So we give them a pittance for stolen ,"confiscated" "aquired" land. And some still complain that its too much.

If the govt/council "aquired" your land/home and gave you nothing for it you would be happy with that then.
Its not just Maori, by the way. Its also Pakeha fighting to get historically "aquired" land back (in Ak) .

No one seems to ***** if its whitey getting compensated.

Yeeee gods, imagine if that line of thinking became the norm around the world.

How much would the Americans owe the British, who in turn would owe the Scots, Irish and Welsh, who in turn would owe…………………………dahh, it’s endless nonsense.

In NZ it is a straight out “Gravy Train” which I don’t wish to feed.

I just wish they would have a referendum whereby you got to choose if you wish to contribute to some wannabe Maori’s silk undies.

I sure as hell don’t! :)

1411191 2015-11-11 08:29:00 What does it matter in the long run ?

If all the money and property in the world were divided up equally at, say, 3 o’clock in the afternoon, by 3.30pm there would already be notable differences in the financial conditions of the recipients. Within that first 30 minutes, some adults would have lost their share. Some would have gambled theirs away and some would have been swindled or cheated out of their portion (thereby making some others richer). The disparity would increase with growing momentum as time went on. After 90 days, the differences would be staggering. And, I’m willing to wager that, within a year or two at the most, the distribution of wealth would conform to patterns almost identical with those that had previously prevailed.

Yes. Perhaps the American Indians, and even more so, the aborigines would be a bit happier.

Most of the world is whinging about their lost land.

It is somewhat different when in fairly modern times, a group of people move in, help themselves, shoot the objectors, confiscate children and so on.
Our govt chose to settle the claims, and has set a time limit to do so.

Good on them, then we all move on.

1411193 2015-11-11 19:36:00 Well you can’t give anything back to the people it was taken from, simply because they are dead.

As for their families, well they are all crossbred by now and just to prove my point let’s look at some of our local Maori Activists. Feel free to add, these are just off the top of my head.

I recon their Surnames alone are a dead giveaway that they aren’t full blooded Maori’s, and anyway, the last known full blooded Maori died 70 odd years ago.
