| 1410742 | 2015-11-01 20:19:00 | Should sports stars get a knighthood? Just for winning a sports tournament (lets be honest, thats why its being discussed) Would Richie get a knighthood if the AB's had been on an 8 year loosing streak? If not then he shouldnt get one just for being on a winning team. He is just doing his job , after all. Why not wait & see what he does in the next 15 years ? Harks back to the days NZ knighthoods were given away to booze & tabaco barons , just for being rich & successful. |

It always has and it always will. Look at it purely as a popularity contest. Our political masters of the day go with whatever they think the general population wants. |

| 1410746 | 2015-11-01 21:11:00 | Big NO!!. No one should get a Knight or Dame hood in NZ there days.. 100% of the people who get them are well paid sports people, public servants, lawyers, judges and company owners. We're not a British colony anymore. It was one of the few good things that the last Labor Gov did that was good but Key brought them back so he could get one at the end of his term. | 1410748 | 2015-11-01 22:17:00 | Yes. It is a public recognition of service to the nation and people of this country. It is NOT paying obeisance to the Queen of England as some 'lefties' like to think, but a purely New Zealand award. The title means people know who holds it, unlike the anonymous award bestowed by the previous government. In the cases of McCaw and Hansen it will be given at retirement, and recognises the successful completion of two World Cup campaigns, the popularity of which was evidenced by the number of NZrs who got up at 5am to watch. Well deserved in my opinion. | Richard (739) | ||

If he was doing alot of charity work etc then OK (maybee he is) If making a claim of viewer numbers(popularity) as an indication, why not David Tua, he had one of the highest TV veiwer numbers, very close to the 2015 finals veiwer no's Perhaps wait 5-10 years after they retire , see what they have been up to then ? And why just the coach & captain. Why not everyone in the team . Surely , there are people more deserving of such a recognition? People who are actually out in the community, trying to make a real difference to people lives . |

Interesting that the current pathetic excuse for a Labour Leader also thinks that Richie should get a knighthood . Having a title in your name opens a lot of board room doors and business class airline lounges to people . . And why not? It serves a good purpose then . I'm not sure of your point(s) . You say one thing then drift around to disagree with yourself . |
