1410652 2015-10-29 22:14:00 Surely THIS (www.stuff.co.nz) must at last entitle us to become part of the Third World at last.

Hell we’ve been trying long enough.

1410653 2015-10-29 22:26:00 I think it's about time councils made recycling centres and dumps free to use for residents, even if I get stuck with a bigger rates bill as a result. People dump rubbish wherever they can because it's too damn expensive to do the responsible thing and dispose of it properly. I know of people who drive 40+ kms to another town to dump their rubbish because that's still cheaper than their local town rates. dugimodo (138)

Really?
I have taken loads of stuff down to the local tip in the last 5 years. Literally, loads. Uteloads stuffed so full we stood on it, tied it with ropes and compressed it down.

Never cost more than $17 - and that involved some concrete - apparently the most expensive item.

Metals are free.
Most loads haven't cost me more than $5.

It's just sheer laziness.

I agree, take a look at Tauranga Transfer Station Charges.

They hardly encourages anyone to use the facility, let alone those on small incomes.

And to top it off they won’t take some stuff which I thought would be a priority.

I agree there is definately some laziness involved, but count yourself lucky because those are some really cheap prices you have in your area.

check these out www.hamilton.govt.nz It basically is beyond some peoples budget to pay that.

That isn't what the bus driver said when I tried taking some past-its-use-by-date compost off to the tip.

Hmm, minimums $15. Waitakere tip $5.
Yes, I'd agree it is more expensive there....

Still this mess was in Auckland, not Hamilton or wherever.

And how many people dump a ton? A mattress isn't that heavy....

1410661 2015-10-31 08:28:00 Some people just like to defy the laws, and defy societies expectaions and morality.

You could make it legal to dump stuff at the corner of every street, and these scumbags would still chuck their crap into the bush, the rivers, and public spaces.

It's not at all unusual to see these f###wits, ohh, excuse me, I mean heroic rebels, no, I really mean f###wits, dumping their rubbish out the door of their car. A car which is parked right beside a rubbish bin. But no, they're way too staunch (or to feeble) to do the decent thing with their filth and walk to the bin with it.

And while it is a generalisation, so not always correct, there's a strong racial bias, and age bias to those who are doing this.
