But not just because he has excelled in his chosen field (although that's probably a reason alone) - but also because of his service to the community. Think of all the school and community visits, free coaching clinics, donations of merchandise to raise funds for charity etc, that he has been involved in. Plus, he's a great role model for youngsters. He proves that no matter where you're from, you can be the best in the world in your chosen field if you work hard and dedicate yourself to it. And - not that this is grounds for knighhood as we should all be like this, but - you never hear any stories about violence, drunken misdeeds, arrogance, etc.
Who would you rather kids of today aspire to be like? Richie McCaw? Or Kanye West?

1410765 2015-11-12 20:53:00 I don't agree with knighthoods and damehoods at all for anyone - they are a relic of another time and another place that we are well rid of. But the fact that judges invariably get a knighthood irritates me beyond measure. For goodness sake, they are only doing their job, and they get handsomely paid for it, and have years of people bowing and scraping in their presence. As long as they don't scare the horses, they all seem to get knighthoods. I have seen a lot of them in action (well, a long time ago now - modern judges seem much better than in former times), and there were a few who were worthy of the highest respect. However, many lacked any special qualities that should deserve any further recognition than their title - Judge. Why give anyone a gong for simply doing the job they are paid to do? John H (8)
