1410901 2015-11-04 01:53:00 So this CVT isnt a good thing ?

In theory they're great. In practice not so. They feel different to drive than a normal auto, which you can get used to, but in most cases they struggle to offer any advantage over an automatic (although under some driving conditions they can improve fuel economy by keeping the engine in the right part of it's power/torque curve), while being more prone to failure and more expensive to fix when they do break. They tend to be more reliable on smaller vehicles, but don't respond well to heavier vehicles or higher power/torque - hence why most of the higher-end manufacturers use a standard auto or a dual-clutch over them. They're a relatively new-to-mainstream technology - they've been around a long time in various forms, but it's only in recent years they've really been widely used. I'm sure soon enough they will get good (and some of the latest ones seem OK, albeit not great), but for now I'd be hesitant of buying an older, used, CVT-equipped vehicle.

1410904 2015-11-04 06:52:00 What is CVT transmission ?

Thanks :)

Most manufacturers put in the small print that you shouldn't tow with a CVT either.

Funilly enough I just bought a Navarra ute 2wd manual diesel.

1410905 2015-11-04 19:45:00 Add some zeroes to your budget and go for a Tesla X :P

On a more useful note, have you looked at the Mazda MPV, Honda Stream or Subaru Exiga?

1410906 2015-11-04 20:02:00 Thanks for that inphinity, no we havent looked at those and that being I didnt know about them, thats why i asked for help.............. :( Trademe comes up with vans and such like when you search 7 seaters and such like.

we are a bit limited of what we can get in Wanganui and our budget is not the best, we are limited by lack of drivers - and restricted by location, every thing we see is out of town and means the tribe has to organise a trip to test drive anything, and school and creche time tables make it difficult. as well as being dairy workers so the cows arnt helpful either.

May have to do some more trademe searches.

appreciate the positive help guys :)

1410907 2015-11-04 20:42:00 Can't your driver go on their own (or with one other) to view out of town, rather than taking the whole family? You're probably what 45min away from say Palmerston North which may have a wider range available? inphinity (7274)
1410908 2015-11-04 20:58:00 lol yeah but its me thats the driver and its not me that the car is for........... and car sales yards dont particulalry like learner drivers taking cars for test drives.... lol the other full licenced driver works and it wont be his car either so yeah..... and driving ability is not sadly related to age lol
so if I go and take the other person the car is for, she has children.... and work to faff around with time table wise........... so the plan was to have a list of cars to look at in our price range, locally or in palmy on saturday.......... but I didnt know what to look at or for in a suitable car.

thanks for the help.

1410909 2015-11-04 22:43:00 My daughter fell in lurve with her best friend's Mazda Premacy, and she has bought one herself - reasonable price for her but I can't recall what it was. The passenger doors are electric opening and closing, and my wife has doubts about the wisdom of buying a car with more technology that can break, but they do seem to be very effective in coralling the sprogs.

Only problem I can see is the small luggage space at the back when all seats are up and being used. Not sure how they could manage trips away in it, but they also have a Subaru Legacy station wagon in the family and I noticed they used that to come down here for the weekend. However, the question remains, how would a family relying on that as "the big car" manage luggage on a long trip?

Here is a TradeMe listing to show you what it looks like/asking price for 2006 model, 106,000 kms. Listing #: 969689133 (I have no connection with the listing, just the first one I picked up in a search, and the photos show how the electric doors work).
