1480945 2021-09-29 09:06:00 I've just ordered a new 2560x1440 165hz monitor and want a new GPU to take advantage of the full 165Hz refresh rate.

I currently have an Intel Core i5 4570 which can output a max resolution over DisplayPort of 3840x2160@60Hz which AFAIK doesn't translate to enough bandwidth for 2560x1440@165Hz.

I am trying to find out what is the minimum GPU I'll need to be able to output 1440p at 165Hz.... so far on my list I have
- Ryzen 3200G + motherboard with DisplayPort output
- Intel Core 11000 series + motherboard with DisplayPort output
- NVidia GT 1030 w/ DisplayPort output
- Radeon RX550 w/ DisplayPort output

Compounding this are reports I've heard that some motherboards that have a DisplayPort output don't run it at the full bandwidth supported by the IGP on the CPU... so going this path could potentially be an expensive failure

Is there something I'm missing?
Can older gen GPUs output the amount of bandwidth I need?

(NOTE: I DON'T PLAY GAMES, but I do want the full 165Hz for desktop use - so please don't tell me to go and buy an RTX3080)

1480946 2021-09-29 10:16:00 Ummmm your logic is a bit flawed... if you are not playing games then there is no point in getting a high refresh rate monitor?

The selling point behind high refresh rate monitors is they are fast enough to keep up with the high rate of frame changes that occur "specifically" in gaming... lower refresh rates usually mean screen tears which is as a result of the monitor not being able to display frame 1 quick enough which results in a half rendered frame 1 because it is then interrupted by having to display frame 2 - which is why you get screen tearing - basically part of one frame is rendered and then part of the next frame is rendered as well.

What is the main workload on your computer?

Movies : 24fps . It was plenty .

I know what you mean; i have all 3 monitors at 240hz and windows is so buttery smooth compared to 60hz it's hard to go back.

Good thing is just for windows and not for games, as long as the GPU is fairly recent it shouldn't be an issue.

I've run it on a 1060 laptop gpu plugged in to three monitors through a thunderbolt dock and everything was buttery smooth.

Any GPU that has DP 1.2 should be fine for it.

11th Gen Intel i3,i5 with either Intel UHD630(?)/UHD 750 or Xe Graphics will do 4096x2304@60Hz (HDMI) and 7680x4320 @60Hz (DP), 5120x3200@60Hz (UHD750)

11th Gen Intel i7/i9 with Xe Graphics will do 4096x2304@60Hz (HDMI) and 7680x4320 @60Hz (DP)

The GTX10x0 and GTX 16x0 series cards will run 1440p but you will be limited to "non 3D rendering applications" at this resolution so anything requiring 3D rendering will likely struggle at 1440p on those cards.

At a minimum you'd need at least a GTX 1080 or 1080 Ti, RTX 20x0 series, AMD RX570/580, RX5700 or higher.

I actually have an RX560 in the garage somewhere- will chuck it in a test bench and test it on my monitors in the weekend if there's time.
