1483883 2022-01-29 01:29:00 I think another issue with Northlanders traveling is boredom on the roads. We've only really got the options of going north or south. There really isn't much east/west alternative unless you want slow, windy roads, but if you want to get anywhere in a hurry, or want to travel to parts of NZ you've never seen, then it's SH1 for hundreds of miles.

The same boring SH1 you've done countless times before, passing through the same little townships that you've always ignored and raced past.

If you want a variety of destination options that aren't the same old stuff you've seen before, then you need to push south of Auckland... that's a lot of boring travel for anyone who started their trip from Kaitaia... 4 boring hours of the same road before an alternative appears on the horizon.

I drove over that yesterday. What a bloody nightmare, trucks everywhere and took nearly 2 hours to do 130 kms.

Never again.

its all slow and windy roads, no such thing as a straight road in northland. sh1 is no better than the back roads.

I drove it in 2002, and decided never again. I fly now.

1483887 2022-01-29 20:59:00 I don't go away much now but don't have any difficulty with the Napier/Taupo road. Used to be a tricky one in the early 60's. SWMBO remembers 4 to 4.5hrs in the 50's in her family's Model A.
