2007-07-13 12:18:00 | Hi there, I upgraded my system just over a mounth ago, it started out really well, then I began having random "lock ups" and now im really haveing serios problems . First things first, heres my specs: Mobo: Asus P5PE-VM Intel 865G LGA775 All In One Motherboard CPU: Intel Pentium D Processor 3 . 2Ghz LGA775 2x2M Cache 800FSB #935 RAM: Silicon Power 1GB DDR-400 PC3200 Memory HDD(primary): 38GB, Matrox, I don't know alot about this harddrive . HDD (secondary, fs drive): 120GB, don't know alot about this one eathier . . I got this Harddrive brand new last Novemeber . Both my harddrives are pluged into IDE cables and all sit very close together . GPU: Palit Geforce 7600GS 256MB DDR3 AGP 8x PSU: Golden 450W . Case: a very basic case, no fancy cooling designs, I have my side case open (I think when I opened it the CPU temp droped a couple of degress too . ) Now, first it started with the odd locl up, they occur usualy after at least an hour of useing the computer, they occur anytime, such as typeing in msn, typeing in FF2 before I isntalled ie7, typeing in ie7, any program up front, such as teamspeak . By "lock up" I mean the screen just freezes, the cursor stops, my typeing stops, and even if listening to wmp11 the music will stop too (spose that rules out a display problem?) . The only way thing that can be done is holding down the power button untill the system stops . I then restart like normal and it continues like normal, not even a "your system has recoverd from a serios error" message after boot up, just continues like normal . . And then theres today, booted up, took a very long time to load everythign on the desktop (like my old 1ghz 256mb RAm system from long ago . . ) , I boot up and go "start, conect too . . " and it just stops there, the start manu frozen with out loading the list of conectins (im dial up) the cursor still moves but everythign is unresponsive, only way to end is once again the big power button . . This happens over and over again, I notice avast isn't running (after noticeing poor perforamce over the past few days I finaly got around to isntalling avast last night) I load it up and it says "VSP database destroyed" . This may be becuase I disconected last night while it was doing a update . . . I opened taskmanger and under the "proceses" tab all the proceses "user" list was empty expect "system idle proces" one had "system" as its user, all the others were blank . so then I manage to load ie7 and that never loads up the conection options there eathier, it just opened and did nothing . So I uninstalled avast . After uninstall avast and rebooting I managed to conect to the internet and there was no freezing, and the taskmanager was back to normal, but very very bad and slow performace, felt like I had 1mb of RAM . . I then do some system restores to last week when the only problem I was having were the completly random lock ups . That didn't fix anything eathier . So reinstalled avast and ran part of a boot scan (just my system drive) then loaded up to the desktop again, still very bad perforamce . My system was useable so I spent awhile online trying to figure it all out, then leave avast to do a scan, I return a couple of hours later and find it did my system drive without finding any virus and it was onto my secondary, it had locked up thow, just the same way I explained earlier so had to shut it down the power button way . And my Flight Simulator (fs9) perforamce is really bad too, I had planned a transatlantic this afternoon . . (what makes me so much more pissed off) . Stuters and overall no where near as fast as a few weeks ago . . So yeah this has be buggerd . Iv proably not explained everything here, but iv done my best, im sure ill be back giving you even more information . Basicly what I have now is a system so slow, and extremly unreliable . I'v been putting up with computer problems for almost three years, its time I have a reliable system I can trust . All help apreciated, please help me fix this! Thanks James

2007-07-13 14:12:00 | after installing all those new hardware, did u format your computer? sounds to me you just need a good format. | AMD (11356) | |
2007-07-13 15:37:00 | what did you upgrade ? if you installed a new motherboad did you install the drivers for it ? . . . . . run a harddrive diagnostic test run a ram diagnostic test does it lock up in safe mode ? how many apps have you running at system startup . . . ? (msconfig)

2007-07-13 20:13:00 | HDD(primary): 38GB, Matrox, I don't know alot about this harddrive . Its Maxtor . And its 40Gb . I would do a malware scan . Spybot, AdAware SE Personal, Hijackthis . You can post the Hijackthis here to be analysed . When you do a system restore it puts all your malwar back too . Leaving the side off your case actually screws up the airflow you know . I don't think you have an overheating problem .

2007-07-13 21:07:00 | Yup I did a reformat when upgradeing my hardware, I installed all the drivers and iv run adaware scans . I would like to try Hijack this, where can I get this application? Also I think the numbder of applications running is irelevent as as I mentioned I got anothor "lock up" even with only avast doing its scanning and nothing else open, but usualy I have fs9 or IvAc, msn, ie7, ts, explorer, wmp11 . . . and the list goes on, I do use rather alot of applications . . . Thanks James

2007-07-13 21:12:00 | Two things I have been woundering about: Could my USB devices be the cause? I have a usb headse and joystick and mouse, last night I left my system to do a defrag and in 8 hours it didn't lock up at all, and maby that is because for testing purposes I unpluged my headset and joystick before going to be bed . Is it possibly these devices can cause such systemn instability and bad performance? The other thigns is defraging, I haven't defraged for a very very long time, at least quite a few mounths, could this have been the cause? Iv defraged both my drives now . Thanks James

2007-07-13 23:26:00 | When you upgraded, what new bits did you add? What parts were from your previous computer? Your USB devices could be a problem if you have not connected them correctly on the motherboard . Leave the headset and joystick unplugged and try the computer without them for a while and see what happens . Not defragging for a long time wouldn't cause the problems you are experiencing . My pick is a hardware fault or lack of correct drivers . Are you sure you installed the motherboard drivers?

| 568881 | 2007-07-14 00:52:00 | Yup definatly installed the drivers, they show in the add remove programs list . My "upgrade" consisted of the new CPU and motherboard, everythign else is I had previosly . I kinda need my joystick, and from memory I had my first "lock up" before getting the USb headset, although the poor perforamce is only in times where I have my headset . I have not installed the drivers for my joysick, I installed them last week but found fps droped by about half, down to near 10 with major stuters, uninstalled the siatek drivers and all was fine . . I ran the hijack this scan, heres the log: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2 . 0 . 2 Scan saved at 11:29:33 a . m . , on 14/07/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5 . 01 . 2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7 . 00 (7 . 00 . 5730 . 0011) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss . exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon . exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services . exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass . exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost . exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost . exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv . exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ . exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer . Im begining to think its the USB drivers, yet that doesn't explain the strange start manu locking up on me when trying to conect to the net . . hmm any diagnostics or tests I can run to see if its the USB devices?
