568581 2007-07-13 01:07:00 Planning to add this Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm 400 GB 16MB cache (ST3500630A) to my ASUS P5AD2-E system which I think only has SATA1. Can I put this 400 GB Seagate HDD is SATA3 (?) in to this P5AD2-E mb? SATA1 HDDs are hard to find now. Or, they are downward compatible?

Cheers

Is there any jumpers that has to be changed?

568584 2007-07-13 01:22:00 SATA drives don't need to be jumpered master or slave as they are automatically configured as far as I'm aware. intel hunter (6666)
568585 2007-07-13 01:22:00 Shouldn't be aye. As inter hunter said they are pretty standard (jumperless) as theres only one channel, not two like IDE. wratterus (105)
568586 2007-07-13 01:24:00 You might need an IDE to SATA adapter, to put an IDE hdd on a SATA connector.

Coz the connections are different.

Looks like this model is IDE and SATA 2. If it is SATA 2, the jumper is on it somewhere at the back to switch to SATA 1.

I mean, from SATA 2 (or 3) to SATA -- is there any jumpers to be changed or the system detects automatically?

SATA 2 hdds have jumpers to switch to SATA 1. Try looking on the back of it.

But they dont have jumpers for Master and slave.

As SATA's are only masters, and you cant have 2 hdds on a SATA connection.

I'm aware of this. This MB has 4 SATA connectors, so it shouldn't pose any issue for adding another SATA to it. Am I right?
