567839 2007-07-11 01:28:00 Hi all,
At the recomendation of various,F1 ers, including Foxymx I have uninstalled Java V5, cleaned everything out as Foxy said to do, except v6 update 1, which must have come in during the week.
However, I have downloaded and installed the update, again. I was asked if I wanted to re install it) update 2 for v6 but there is no specific prime download that I can identify to replace Java v5, as such-and in which this v2 update will reside.

That version of Java had something like 800 odd mb in it, was in add/remove, but now no "prime"version 6 is not there, although the update is in add/remove,

What am I doing wrong?

567840 2007-07-11 01:42:00 Java is up to version 6 Update 2 so you'll need to clean out Update 1. This is available from this page (www.java.com). You will be wanting to download this one: Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline * filesize: 13.16 MB.

When that is downloaded, follow the instructions (again) in this post (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) to uninstall all previous versions then when that is done, install the one you just downloaded.

I always turn off the automatic updating of Java and just grab the latest version when it comes out rather than let Java update itself.

567841 2007-07-11 02:03:00 Hi Foxymx,

I have just gone into the site which verified as "Java installed correctly"-so my query below appears pointless - but read it anyway please
Yep, I did as you had previously suggested - Smithie 38 was in touch, with you recently,so I cleaned out everything as you told him to do- using Windows search and Regseeker---and rebooted , but when I went into that site it only quotes v6 update 1 and has no "base" or platform that v 5 has had.
It, v 6 Java runtime, updtae 1 is now in my add/remove and windows "control panel"- which means that update 1 is there but what about replacing the v5 platform?-- I am blowed if I can see such

567842 2007-07-11 02:26:00 Uninstall ALL versions of Sun Java in add/remove programs.

Then download 6 Update 2.

Then delete C:\Program Files\Java

Then delete C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun

Then install the latest version of Sun Java.

Dont worry about using search or regseeker.

Just delete the above folders, and install the latest version. After you've uninstalled ALL previous versions.

567843 2007-07-11 02:32:00 Hi Speedy G,
I thought I had done that-but the download I keep getting ( from foxymx )'s site says java 6 v1- but does not give me the old platform as did v5- by the look of it I don't need that now ?
O K I wil lgo a huntin' and find v6 update 2, and that would appear to be all I need.
Thank you both

That site says version 1? Strange. Go to MajorGeeks (www.majorgeeks.com) and grab it there then.

567846 2007-07-11 03:27:00 Hi Foxymx,

Bingo ! I thought I was on a different planet -= I too had to register and work my way down a real humongous list of questions- some of which insist on answers ( such as e mail address etc )
Thank you- I am now downloading from Major Geeks as you advised - and thanks again Speedy - you are worth a vote or three :illogical
---although I vote for you but just wonder if some of the comments --that you are of more value in the "ranks" so to speak might be right
No doubt you will get the job- please don't let it make you unapproachable - will you?

Just for my info, what's the reasons for deleting all the previous versions of Java? When Java is doing it's updating (automatically), doeesn't it uninstall the older version first? Any special reason for turning off the auto update in Java?
