568657 2007-07-15 06:26:00 What can you do to help me?

Well, if you responded to some of the suggestions, you might get somewhere.

568658 2007-07-15 08:34:00 With respect to the post about the point of connection of the modem, the first thing to look at is how your modem is connected.

This is the biggest cause of poor performance with ADSL, yet it's the one area most overlooked.

A "she'll be right" attitude towards the connection simply won't work.

The closer you can connect the modem to the Telecom demarcation point the better. It should be on a single BT jackpoint (ie not doubled up with a phone, even if the phone does have a filter on it).

An old BT jackpoint may have corroded contacts inside, therefore giving a poor connection. It might be ok for voice, but no good for data.

Same goes for the cable between the modem and the jackpoint. If it's old, dodgy-looking or has green deposits on the pins of either end, replace it.

Make sure that all other phones, fax machines etc in the house have filters.

Try unplugging ALL other equipment from any other jackpoints in the house and see if your speed increases.

I've had instances of plug-in filters becoming faulty as well so if you suspect one, swap it out and see what difference it makes.

568659 2007-07-15 11:58:00 good advice trouper, also worth mentioning that the router doesn't need a filter - it's for the phones benefit. So if you're not sharing the jackpoint with a phone you don't need a filter.

A "splitter" in the ETP with the ADSL having a dedicated jackpoint is the best way to go, these are better quality than the plug in filters and less prone to failure.
