569622 2007-07-17 07:41:00 Everytime I switch users, my screen goes black, and the monitor says 'Optimum recommended settings 1650 x 1050 @ 60hz'

That's exactly as I have it set, but still it blanks out and will not respond until the computer is restarted, which means hitting reset.

It's infuriating. I've loaded new drivers for the video card and the monitor, no good.

Windows Vista Ultimate
Radeon 9600 Video
Samsung SyncMaster 226BW
AMD Athalon 64 3400+
1GB ram

Any similar experiences? Any Ideas?

Sound like your prob?

569624 2007-07-17 11:37:00 This happens on my new Vista Premium laptop and isn't a bug or problem. Its just normal and a way of differentiating the UAC alert from any other program's request or pop-up. beeswax34 (63)
569625 2007-07-17 11:41:00 Interesting article on Vista on CNN
Vista plodding along six months after release
Chris Pirillo leaned away from his webcam and pointed to his printer/scanner/fax machine, which stopped scanning and faxing after he installed Microsoft Corp.'s new Windows Vista operating system.
Vista interacts differently with programs and peripherals than previous versions of Windows.
"I can't live in Vista if the software that I use in my life for productivity does not work," said Pirillo, in the third minute of a 52-minute video he posted on YouTube.

That's just my guess and is the usual suspect when hardware isn't acting right in Vista's presence. Even if you did have the latest drivers it doesn't mean this configuration is going to work properly.

Yeah, it's not UAC. I mean, the screen blacks out - switches off. The monitor then says that it isn't set at the optimum settings - which it is - but nothing can bring it back. I have to do a 'disruptive shutdown'. Reset the computer.

Uh huh, latest drivers all round, latest patches for vista, the works.

To clarifiy - I can 'lock screen' and unlock, no problem. I can go back to the 'switch user' screen, and back to my own account, no problem. As soon as I go from another account back to mine, the whole thing crashes.

569628 2007-07-17 22:02:00 For the record, too - I don't mind the UAC darkening the screen. Everyone grumbles to hell and back about it, but my home PC is used by four different people, lots of apps installed and uninstalled - and the whole screen darkening thing reminds me that I'm doing something I should be paying attention to.

Just my two cents on that issue.

I'm just wondering whether the other user accounts have that setting also. It would be worth checking in case there is a discrepancy somewhere.

That's so simple that I hadn't thought of it. :stare:
I'll rush home and try it and report back.

It was worth a shot. But all accounts have the same settings, same colour depth, same everything :(
