569363 2007-07-16 00:24:00 Hi everybody

got a problem:
Running Win2k3SBS and WinXP (dual boot) and machine started to reboot itself once every couple of days with an error message saying something about "at least one service or driver failed".
Now it won't recognise the keyboard at all, so i can't log in to try to address the issue.
But heres the weird bit: while booting up and before windows starts the keyboard works - i can get to the cmos screens and select which OS to use.
Can't log in to either OS because at that point the keyboard doesn't work.

Suspect been hit by virus, so have disconnected from the web and am now looking for recommendations on who to get in to fix the problem. I'm in Auckland CBD so local is preferred.

569364 2007-07-16 00:47:00 Without a keyboard, I doubt you will be able to even check if you have a virus. Is the KB a PS/2?, only solution is to purchase a KB with a USB interface. SolMiester (139)
569365 2007-07-16 00:55:00 sorry- should have mentioned
have tried different keyboards (both PS2) with and without a USB adapter
so its not the keyboard, and I'm pretty sure its not the PS2 connector

569366 2007-07-16 01:06:00 Can you get into Windows in Safe Mode? FoxyMX (5)
569367 2007-07-16 01:15:00 Nope: same problem with the keyboard.
Do I need to rip out the HDD, throw it into a HDD enclosure and run a virus check from a second machine?

569368 2007-07-16 01:24:00 Wonder if this (support.microsoft.com) is the prob?

Even tho it says its for NT.

569369 2007-07-16 01:30:00 The at least one service message is the same for any event/service which failed during setup, it does not refer to a keyboard failure specifically.

You tried a USB keyboard?

569370 2007-07-16 02:47:00 I don't have a pure USB only keyboard but I did try a PS2 keyboard through a USB adapter - you're wondering if theres something wrong with the PS2 keyboard socket? I'm reasonably convinced that thats not the case... FreshMeat (12556)
569371 2007-07-16 02:55:00 USB - PS/2 adaptors are crap.

Try a real USB keyboard.

569372 2007-07-16 03:32:00 Freshmeat, I suggest a real USB KB as its the only common denominator. I dont think a virus would take out 2 partitions at once with the same effect.
PS/2 failure is quite common....
